Fast forward and rewind will result in infinite loading swirl until restarting episode

same here and this for a long time now and i start getting pissed that this issue is ignored.

jumping backward is impossible in win10+ff.

It’s crazy how it is not fixed yet. It’s annoying to the point I had to install old version like 1.14 that works fine. And sometimes I update Plex to the actual version just to see that this bug is still here. Like, really? And now they are sending email that they soon stop supporting old builds. Guess then I will need an alternative. Until then - hello darkness, my old 1.14 build.

i had the same issue for months or years even. There is a new option in the web player settings called ā€œuse alternative streaming protocolā€ which shall only fix random video skips for chromium based browsers. With this activated, the rewind issue seems to be completely gone, even on firefox. Once disabled, every SECOND rewind in short time makes the video goes buffering forever. Looking in the logs i see that for example transcoder/…/chunk-stream0-00052.m4s could not be found. The first file existing in this very folder is chunk-stream0-00053.m4s . It seems like the transcoder wouldnt be bothered to create the older file on demand when rewinding. But once again, activating the alternative streaming protocol seems to fix this problem.

Thank you Chrissi this seems to work! Although it seems to freeze as usual but it is just a fraction of a second - both forward and rewind works actually nicely now and several times in a row.

You all can find it in Settings >> PLEX WEB >> Debug

I’m currently experimenting with Chris’s method above. I’m pretty sure the issue is expired token credentials somewhere. Probably between the Plex Server and The Plex Pass service or a 3rd party metadata service.

Basic Info:
My Server is on Linux and I have issues streaming from Android and Windows Apps, not to mention the Linux Desktop Server itself.

Always playing using original source. Jumping backwards seems to be a bigger problem than jumping ahead in the film.

Not using any any certificates. Problem persists whether I require secure conections or not. And I still see XHR data moving through on plain http, often accompanied by an error warning (which Plex says they have an easy workaround to by providing certificates, but I don’t see any explanation ANYWHERE on how to obtain the DigiCert certificate, much less specially what else I need to configure for it to function).

Thank You Chrissi! This worked for me on Chrome and Plex Media Player.

Same issue for me on Amazon Firestick 4K. Surprised to see that this has been around for years.

i5 with low CPU util, 8GB ram, gig connection, everything hard-wired.

Thank you @Chrissi, your advice resolved my problem. Replying to this thread to thank you for sharing to to keep the thread open for others.

This fix from @Chrissi also fixed my player in Firefox. The issue however still persists on my Apple TV.

Thank you! This fixed it for me in Firefox.

Wow!!! After 4+ years, two separate reports with full logs and steps to reproduce, there is a solution for my issue. I just happened run into this thread this morning and I can say the setting that Plex introduced does address the issue.

I guess we don’t have a way of forcing this to our users? I mean similarly to the Quality web settings, they would need to individually go and tick that?
Also does it fix other browsers like Safari for example, because I have experienced the same there?
Thanks.

As an introductory remark I would like to say that I am extremely miffed that the Plex company has the nerve to charge money for a setup having so many scandalous bugs (just browse the forum to see all bugs, on all platforms, as well as not working functionalities, etc etc) that keep being unsolved more that 4 years after they are spotted by clients. (Yes, let’s stop saying users, we are clients.)

I have indeed have the same issue, since I started with Plex last month, and the issue appears on

  • web (via chrom, firefox and edge),
  • android phone app
  • android tv app.

After doing ā€œ10s backā€ in a video between 2 to 4 times in average, the orange circling icon appears and then, there’s now way on earth I can kill the video I am looking at and it usually ends up with restarting the PMS (hosted on a recent 4GB 4CPU synology 920+ NAS).

This issue appears with small videos as well as with big ones, independently of the quality etc, even without subtitles.

I have a Plex Lifetime Pass and I am really, really pissed off (sorry for the profanity) at a point that I would dream of being reimbursed of my Plex Lifetime Pass and leave this s*** of a product Plex forever and never have anything to do, even remotely, with them. I explained this via twitter to Keith Valory who obviously doesn’t care at all so far. (Would someone car at Plex, such a handicaping bug would not last for more than 4 years.)

This bug makes plex useless if you try to watch something not from the beginning. I’ve increased Transcoder default throttle buffer to 3600 and it works fine if I jump less than an hour forward, but what if I forgot to add subtitles? Then it breaks again and I have to wait for it to transcode until that spot. My transcode speed is always above 3 so that’s not the issue.

This worked for me too, thanks.

This issue is still relevant. The above mentioned fix is sadly only for the Web player but on Samsung TV client it doesn’t solve it. Fast forwarding more than 1 minute results in infinite loading circle. I can only fast forward 2 x 30sec.

I don’t know why its so hard for Plex to reproduce this problem.

Just open a high bitrate movie, make sure it’s transcoding, press 5x rewind and 5x fast forward, with as less delays possible, and it will hang on any client.

It’s bizarre that a user above found a workaround in the browsers and also debugged actually whats happened, yet there is no solution from Plex for all these years

This happens on all clients on all platforms and has been happening for years.

Yeah, when I need to rewind, especially when using the ā€œWatch Together ā€œ feature, I find pausing the playback and then seek backward/forward nets the best results.

I’m seeing this now randomly on the CCwGTV when we use the ad skip button
