A lot of TV series have bonus content now and the ability to display it much like bonus content from movies would be helpful. Also, the ability to distinguish different versions of the same episode. For example, S01E01 of The Walking Dead, which has the aired version and a black and white version.
I could see it working in the same way that it does for movies. Select a season, then select an episode and down at the bottom of the episode page it displays the special features associated with that season. Or go even further and create another level to the file system allowing specific episodes to display only their own extra content.
Great idea, especially for anime where you can always find a lot of community content like AMVs (anime music videos) and official extras like bonus episodes that don’t follow the main-plot, etc…
I raise you another great idea though:
Maybe even allow to link to picture albums.
For example, I may love the anime Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and I have several folders with fan art and other stuff that would be amazing to be linked to the show itself.
glassedsilver, that’s a good idea too. I admit I never really got too deep into anime, except for the big movies like Akira, Ninja Scroll, Ghost in the Shell, etc. However, I’m of the mind that if a feature is relatively easy to implement, then go ahead and add it regardless of how many people might actually use it. There are plenty of things about Plex that I’ll never touch, but they’re still good to have for those that will.
I’ve been setting up Plex for the first time - I was assuming the same specials/extras naming organization supported by the Local Media Assets Movies applied to TV Shows as well. I’m surprised to learn it doesn’t. I second this feature request!
bump. Why no response from Plex to there paying customers about this? At least a comment as to why no movement on this issue.
The Season 00 or episode 100 workaround is one crappy workaround. Just shows all your content scattered in a mess under one season. All that is needed is a folder for these extras (but not “extras” because that’s an IGNORE catch for PLEX??? why I don’t know); but some named folder (maybe DVD EXTRAS for example) under each SEASON folder for organization sake that you could dump the files in.
Seinfeld/
…Season 01/
…DVD Extras/
…Seinfeld - DVDXtra - The Stake Out - Inside Look
…Seinfeld - DVDXtra - Not That There’s Anything Wrong With That (Bloopers)
Plex would then simply show the contents of that folder under each season in a section underneath and marked/separated off from the actual episodes; maybe with a line or heading saying DVD Extras under the main season episodes. TVDB is totally useless for these things, so you would have to manually edit the metadata, which isn’t hard.
bump
I was surprised this feature isn’t there. I love the feature in Movies. Now, let’s get it implemented for Television.
Definitely want this. For Doctor Who (2005), most seasons have “prequel” mini episodes for many of the episodes. I’d love to be able to account for these in Plex.
As I am starting the process of ripping all my DVDs, I also was very surprised to find that the TV extras aren’t included the same way that movie extras are. Why is it different? This is definitely non-intuitive and not user-friendly.

They match just fine in Plex. You just have to name them according to the TVDB and put the in a “specials” folder.
thetvdb.com/?tab=season&seriesid=78804&seasonid=26260&lid=7
It has pretty much everything about the Doctor that’s been released since 2005 and even though they are in a different folder; they play in the proper place ( at least they do for me. I’ve seen a few people say they couldn’t get the auto-play to work) for the season that you’re watching.

They’re different because TMDB and TVDB are different and Plex has to match the database to be able to pull the information for files. Most TV shows have a “special” section that has most or all of the DVD extras; you just have to get used to doing it their way.

Well…not really. For example, TVDB has only one of the special features that are on the Firefly DVD. In fact, the TVDB specifically says “A special is NOT deleted scenes, bloopers, gag reels, etc. from the DVD release of shows.”
Compare this to Movies, where additional content doesn’t have to match anything in any database, the content just has to have the special ending (e.g. -deleted).

Firefly is and always has been it’s own special sort of hell. Most TV show sets are included, but there are just enough that don’t work to make you wanna scream. You’re right, it’s not intuitive or as easy as it should be; but it’s the kind of thing you get used to if you’re gonna build your own media server. If you look at the Doctor Who link, it has everything; Christmas specials, prequels, webisodes, music specials tv movies, etc. . . but yeah, some don’t seem very thorough That’s TVDB’s problem, not Plex, Plex works pretty well, but if anyone thinks it’s gonna be easy to set up and keep up, they’re wrong. Plex is not a flexible program, unfortunately.
Considering how long this feature has been requested - and how long it’s been ignored - best to find another way and live with it.
I don’t have any Specials for Firefly (oddly), but let’s take SG-1.
There are already some SG-1 Specials listed at TVDB, so I started at E10 so as not to bump heads with any of the listed Specials:
Then with some hand editing an attractive display is possible:
Note: I’ve got a few to finish - must have run out of gas during that session, but also note I added the ‘Episode Name’ to my file names so it’ll be pretty easy to ‘Get Info’ while editing to find out what’s in that file when I go in to edit again - not unlike Movie Extras… if you don’t give them a descriptive name, you won’t have any idea what’s in them.
Oh I agree, and working within the limits of what the software can do is exactly what I’m doing, but I can still hope that someday TV will get the same love as movies. I am using this method after seeing your post describing it in another thread and it seems to be working fine. Many thanks!
btw, for anyone with Plex Pass that stumbles on this thread as I did, there is an actual feature request (which I thought was pretty difficult to find) at forums.plex.tv/discussion/124701/feature-request-allow-content-extras-for-tv-series/p1. It’s one of the more popular requests, with over 100 upvotes.
+1 for this feature request.
That said, I have the problem with Series like Star Trek, and some say you can display it using 00 or 100 but when I do that, the bonus content never displays at all… has anyone actually managed to get those to display even inside a season?

Literally, 4 posts up, is an example of what you have to do.
If you don’t name and structure properly, TV Show Episodes are invisible.
It takes some hand editing, but for now (and likely for ever) - it’s all we have.
