I would like to request a new feature that enables Plex libraries to store and display movie titles in two languages. This would allow users to search for and view movies using both the original (or English) title and an alternative language (e.g., Bulgarian).
Many movie titles have different names in different regions, and users often search for movies based on the title they are familiar with. Currently, Plex only allows a single title per movie entry, making it difficult to find content if the user knows a movie by its non-English title.
Adding support for dual-language titles would:
Improve search functionality by allowing users to find movies by either the original or localized title.
Provide a more intuitive browsing experience for multilingual users.
Enhance library organization, especially for international movie collections.
At present, some users manually modify movie titles by adding both names (e.g., “The Godfather / Кръстникът”) in the title field or use custom metadata to store alternative names. However, this is not an ideal solution because:
It disrupts sorting and makes the library look inconsistent.
Searching for one version of the title may still not yield results.
Manually updating metadata for large libraries is time-consuming.
Proposed Implementation
Dual-Title Metadata Field
Introduce an additional field in the movie metadata where users can enter an alternative title.
This could be sourced from online databases (e.g., TMDb, IMDb) or manually added.
Search Enhancement
Modify the search algorithm to recognize and return results based on either title field.
Example: Searching for “Krъstnikът” or “The Godfather” would return the same movie.
Library Display Options
Provide a setting where users can choose to display both titles or select a preferred default.
Possible display modes:
Original Title (Default)
Alternative Title
Both Titles (e.g., “The Godfather (Кръстникът)”)
Additional Considerations
Ensure compatibility with all Plex platforms (Web, Mobile, TV apps).
Allow batch editing or automatic fetching of alternative titles from metadata providers.
Support for multiple alternative titles where applicable.
I saw similar suggestion was proposed in the past but not explained in details but it is closed and i couldn’t comment there old proposal
Would love to hear thoughts from the community and the Plex team on the feasibility of implementing this!
As Otto pointed out, Plex is already covering some elements of your suggestion:
Original title is part of the metadata collected by the agents
Search will find an item both by its localized and original title
As for displaying the original title on the media details page: there’s already an existing suggestion discussing that option (and its intricacies / boundaries). Please comment/vote in that thread in order to help us avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes.
Unless I’m missing some unique aspect of your suggestion I’ll close this thread as a duplicate.
Search results are based only on the title which is displayed. So if its original title which is english you cannot find the movie by the Bulgarian name and vice versa. And last but not least the secondary language name is not visible.
I made simple search for the same movie in english and bulgarian. As yoy can see in bulgarian cannot be found.
Below you can see options i have when i click search settings and details of item being searched when library language is set to bulgarian and use original title check is unticked
