All these reponses to this request and not even a comment from plex… You see why your paying customers get annoyed? You must have a direct line with someone at Plex being as you are a moderator. Why not bring this thread to someones attention?
This is an on-going issue. Mods are using “organization” to bury complaints and suggestions to fix it. Votes are extremely limited so users can’t actually show support for the many issues facing this app.
You guys are aware that you can use Plex without an internet connection (Network → List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth), right? I’m not trying to defend Plex’ (greedy) decision here (and I voted on this as well), but I keep reading “I can’t use my local server without internet” and that is simply not true. Sure, you’ll lose access to managed users (which sucks), but you’ll still have access to your media.

will be nice too have !

Agreed.
We used to be able to do it. I originally had my server setup so I could visit the IP and the plex port and log in. Now plex has removed that AWESOME ability. They are having API issues with plex.tv right now and I cannot watch my local library!!! Guess what just got added to my list… moving away from PLEX
Giving your household admin level access to your server isn’t exactly a wise choice. This workaround only works when you have a household size of 1.
Why is this constantly brought up as a solution. It isn’t. It’s a workaround that then breaks Plex Home (and parental controls) and also gives full access to admin functions of your server to anyone on your network.
Maybe this just gets suggested by people who live by themselves or don’t have kids, but this is more than just a simple inconvenience to a lot of people.
Buddy, you realize that I’m on your team, right? I absolutely dislike that my setup depends on the Plex’ servers being up. I have an account for every single member of my family (mostly because of the independent watch history) so I does affect me directly.
The only reason Plex wants the authority over authenticiation is control. But using that workaround, every single client I’ve used so far just remembers the last logged-in user; so yeah it’s an inconvenience (reminder that I have also voted for this), but it’s not the “end of the world.” I guess that’s the price you pay for such a polished product – if you want full control, you gotta go OSS (e.g. Jellyfin).
Again, this breaks features people rely on…
+1 agreed. Even if I had to pay more for this feature to be added, I would. Kinda makes me want to switch to something else. Makes no sense to be locked out of your own local content and lose all the functionality because the internet goes out or their servers go down.
I for sure won’t be recommending anyone pay for the service unless they make this correction.
BUMP: this would have been perfect for today. plex.tv API issues prevented me from logging into my local instance. In multiple “Cord Cutting” videos/pages, Plex is the center piece.
But if internet goes out because of natural disasters (i.e. Hurricanes, Tornados, and/or Blizzards), we won’t be able to access our local Plex instance, and may need consider something else.
It’s been 6 years since this was requested, even adding a local check for a cached cookie on the server which expires monthly, before attempting to authenticate with the cloud would be preferable to having hours of downtime over a couple of months.
I don’t think this will ever happen…
Plex Wants the traffic on Plex,TV ad revenue.
Not sure how they’re going to get that from me since I’ve disabled the ability to access TV for all users.
They should be more transparent about it.
Directing traffic to Plex.tv is one thing, but when their Login API is down or my internet provider is down, my PMS is basically useless as none of my devices can connect to it, which is frustrating when a hurricane blows threw and knocks out power for a week.
(Most of the neighborhood has generators for they’re homes)
I want to use Plex in my cabin, where there is no internet anywhere around. I have an Eero local network and my Plex server and then Apple TV’s around the house.
Why can I not use my Plex Pass in this way? Can’t my own local assets in the other room be played over my LAN?
Why is this ignored for years? My kids are Home Users. They download movies for offline access and if they are offline, they are not able to watch them. Does not make sense.
This is so essential for any media server imo and shocked to discover it’s not currently possible. I am not saying because plex might have outage etc. I am saying PMS should work with auth functionality without Internet.
Honestly all media server I know has this core feature. Please Plex developers, make it a priority! ![]()
Question
Let’s imagine one day Plex is down but still have access to my server
Will my remote users still be able to watch my content ?
