If this is implemented I’ll get Plex Pass, if not I’m getting Emby. I had my Internet go out for over a week recently. It was really embarrassing when we couldn’t access my media that was hosted on the same LAN because Plex wanted to connected to the Internet, despite all local devices being authed anyways…
WOW, this is from 2015 and still not implemented.
So how many votes are needed for plex to allow users to access their movies in their own network…
This is really important in times like these, we saw it yesterday again.
So maybe you don’t wait for 1000+ Votes and another 5 years and just implement it. Sure you will disable all plex pass features while in offline mode but thats ok.
Plex will not allow this to happen unless they are forced to do it.
Requiring users to connect through Plex TV adds to their user counts.
Those counts help Plex Inc.. to leverage new revenue..
Plex Inc is a for profit company… making it’s owners millions…
If you look at the feature request vote system, it’s pretty clear that it makes no difference if it’s 5 votes or 500 votes. Plex implements whatever they want, not what the users want. ![]()
I’d vote for this, but as I’ve already used up my votes for other years old feature request that won’t be added…
Guy’s Plex defo does not care what their users want. Even people with lifetime plex passes do not get a response from them.
I’ve posted multiple forum posts and feature requests about this as they all just get closed or dismissed. See links below:
Other people have also posted this request and just been dismissed:
They just don’t care… Anyone else thinking of jumping ship from this software? They’re practicies are becoming concerning. Emby Media server looks to have all the features of Plex (Wonder if this post gets removed)
It has been explained to you that multiple posts about the same feature are going to be closed. The idea is to collect all votes in one thread.
In this case, this thread here. That’s why this one is kept open.
I fully apprechiate that however you and the Plex team seem to pick and choose what to reply to.
Instead of answering everyone on this feature requests questions all you have done is responded too is a very trivial part of my post.
Out of my whole post that is the only part you have replied too? I showed examples of multiple forum posts and feature requests that others have also posted to prove this a wanted feature and there has been no real response to this request since 2015?
I have paid for this software and got not real response to all of my posts. One of your moderators requested for me to post the feature request that got closed in the first place lol it seems you are happy to comment on what your users are doing wrong but completely unwilling to respond to any feature requests?
I am a forum moderator, not a developer. I don’t decide which feature requests are implemented and which aren’t.
All I can do is to help keeping those requests in order, and to concentrate similar requests into one common thread, so that the powers above me get a clear picture of how many users wish for the same thing.
with yesterdays plex.tv outage i do feel we need a locally stored authentication token even if it reached out every few days. my server not being available almost makes me regret buying the lifetime pass. I also have my own media that was completely inaccessible, even from the server itself, OUTRAGEOUS! also the need to reauth after reboot .. because of an update SMH.
I’ll add that the outage kind of showed a huge flaw in the current system. From what’s being talked about too because of it Plex is the only media server that needs online authentication to play locally
The outage just now should be proof enough that Plex is not robust enough to survive a cloud outage while still allowing local content access.
This crap needs to be resolved!
Maybe some kinda cached credentials could be the solution? i.e authentication-request goes to our servers that relays it to plex.tv.
If Plex.tv is down users can login as long as they havent changed password since last login.
Make cached credentials valid for 8 days.
Thanks how Microsoft let you login to a domain-joined computer even without network.
Guys, plex doesn’t listen.
Example: Fourm post going back to 2012 with 1200+ votes which needs little to no coding to implement however they cannot even be bothered to do it. Even though their paying customers are asking.
MY suggestion for this feature years ago:
Summary:
Logging into my plex server Locally: Have the option to setup Plex so the only authenication you need on the local network is your managed user name and PIN. NO Online login
Logging in my plex server remotely via the internet: How it’s setup currently. When you first access the server ask for a Plex.tv login, then once logged in and confirmed they have access to my server ask for the managed user details.
This is a good way to do it.
100% honest I am not even sure why this is even a question. Offline mode is a must. For my case, I don’t even want my Plex server on the internet for friends or family to use. But during a bad winter storm, I don’t want to be stuck without our media either. Seems a little silly that it requires internet to watch local content. And for us, we have one account per person because I want to filter what the kids can and cannot see.
Does it work if you manually specify the server’s IP address in the client?
This is how it used to work, much better, i hate having this online authentication system but they want us to be dependent on them.
Yes…but will only work on the last login you used in the Plex App or Plex on the nVidia Shield. This is where 99% of what we watch.
I am fine paying for an extra module if it means I can be offline.
Why should we be dependent on them? Why is this even a requirement?
This isn’t really a feature request, more of policy change request. If I recall correctly, back when Plex decided to go this route with login, people jumped ship and went to Emby. Nothing has changed with this policy since, with either party. It’s by design. They know what we want and they weighed their options. If Emby were more of a direct threat, maybe Plex would be more open to pleasing us with features that sacrifice data collection. But in reality, if Emby were better they would probably follow Plex’s lead on this.
If you want this “feature” you will have to keep Emby or Jellyfin as a backup. I keep both running along side of Plex. Jellyfin just to follow along with progress, Emby to manage my own logins and share live TV with family (Plex doesn’t allow that anymore either).
