I guess DV-support could be added to the new player without Apples intervention. It has its own set of problems though.
For native support (the old player), the request would need to be directed at Apple.

Don’t most people use the new player in Plex on the Apple TV 4K, though? That’s the one that supports HDR out of the box, so I just assumed most of us did.
Idk what most people do, but I occasionally experience jerky playback with it so I use the old, unless I need to use PGS subs
Interesting. I’ve never experienced jerky playback with the new player on my Apple TV 4K, and this is streaming from an almost 10 year old Intel i7 3770K box with 16 GB of RAM. But I Direct Play everything.
Has there been any progress on this? I am able to playback DV Mp4 files but the screen displays a green tint. The same file coming from the same Plex Server plays fine in Infuse player on the same AppleTV4K !?
Nope. Sadly, Plex still haven’t added support to this on the Apple TV 4K. Infuse is the only way to do it right now.
Infuse still doesn’t support it either. My DV files playback as HDR on there too. They’re also waiting for support from apple, it seems.
At this point, I think I’m just going to get a shield pro.
Since that post Apple has added Profile 8 support so that iPhone 12’s Dolby Vision video works on Apple TV.
Not sure if access to that is available to 3rd party devs though.
Edit: Lol, nvm. Reading through this thread it seems even Profile 8 iPhone 12 video doesn’t work properly on the Apple TV 4K yet. We may have to wait for the next Apple TV lineup. Or hopefully just a tvOS update.
The fact that the iPhone 12 uses Profile 8 just the same as 4K blurays do does bode confidence that all this will be sorted out soon though.
But Blu-ray 4K from discs are mostly profile 7.
Hm, seems I got confused because the Infuse devs were mentioning Profile 8. Hopefully Profile 8 support also lets Profile 7 work.
My Sony TV registers the DV files as DolbyVision when played back in Infuse.
Is that inFuse running native on your Sony TV? I’d imagine the Google Store version is different than the iOS version on Apple TV (including its native support of MKV layers).
Nope its on my AppleTV4K. I don’t use the “Google” part on my SonyTV at all. I use my ATV for all my content. When I playback the DV encoded MP4 on the ATV using Infuse, my TV registers it as DolbyVision.
We’re talking about MKV support, not MP4…
All, as per the spec.
I’m not optimistic about that. Profile 7 isn’t really a subset of Profile 8.
One conspiracy theory is that Dolby isn’t allowing set-top boxes to decode Profile 7. That’s for UHD Blu-ray. Only players “need” to be able to decode it.
Edit: That should be “encouraging” rather than “allowing”.
What’s allowing Dolby Vision to work nicely on Nvidia Shield then? Seems strange that you can play Blu-ray Remuxes there but not on anything else. Does Android allow Profile 7 support somehow?
Sorry, edited that slightly.
The Shield’s decoder (and I think a couple TVs, and maybe the newest Fire/Fire Stick?) does support Profile 7. (Now I want to go read and see if the FEL issues were resolved.)
I’m 100% in the “I hope Apple adds it” camp, and hoping it doesn’t require a new Apple TV.
I noticed in the release notes for Version 7.11
" * Add support for Dolby Vision video playback."
But that is probably for profile 5/8 , not 7.
Supposedly it’s not “officially” supported (no streaming boxes do since playing back remux was never their intended purpose), hence some jankiness with DV playback in current state. DV decoder crashes. The colors are wrong at places (though I wouldn’t say unwatchable). We don’t really know if this can change. Last I heard, Nvidia is working with Dolby. (refer to their forum topic on DV color issue) But they haven’t shared anything beyond that.
I can confirm that Dolby Vision is now working within a MKV Container on Version 7.11 (22422). I’ve tested it with Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Collateral - all DV Remux Releases…
