[FEATURE REQUEST] Dolby Vision support for MKV on Apple TV 4K

On Apple TV 4K??! Or what did you test it on?

Can confirm. Had to turn off TrueHD 7.1, because the MKV container won’t trigger Dolby Vision, but works other than that. I only have a sound bar, so no big deal.

Yup Apple TV 4K. Update is available.

I don’t think it ‘really’ is: Dolby Vision Profile 7 & 8 support (.ts/.mkv files) - #18 by james - Video Playback - Firecore

Yes, it seems Plex is simply switching to DV for these videos…which are actually playing in HDR10

Bummer. I was hoping to watch LOTR this weekend in Dolby Vision.

Let’s hope the Roku has a working DV profile 7 with Dual Layer.

Someone like @sergiou87 may be able to clarify.

I only get HDR from an MKV DV file. Don’t know which profile but the one Makemkv creates…
On ATV 4K.

Yep, that’s where James clarified it to me. (and that the device isn’t capable currently)

Are you on TestFlight.
Last I knew it was only available in the beta app.

Ah, I see. No, I am using the normal release cycle. Sorry, I guess I misunderstood

I am not on the test flight app on my TV. It’s on the normal release cycle.

Try again. Make sure you’re on build 7.11. Also, it doesn’t work if the Remux has TrueHD 7.1

Right, all my MKVs have TrueHD 7.1 sound  Sticking with my Nvidia Shield

Well, this just happened (for both iPhone as well as Apple TV 4K)!

See above comments. It shows that, but it’s not True Dolby Vision.

What sort of Dolby Vision is it, then?

I have to hand it to Dolby’s branding machine. They’re geniuses.

It’s not Dolby Vision at all, if you checked the earlier comments. Basically, it’s tricking the Apple TV into staying or kicking on Dolby vision, but is streaming HDR10. This was confirmed based on color spaces and various other tests. The Apple TV 4k can not support profile 7 with Dual Layer Dolby Vision at this time. Maybe in the future that will happen, but it could be a software update, or a new Apple TV 4K that you have to buy.

Yay, a logical fallacy!

Good try. This isn’t about it not being Dolby Vision on the merits of it not hitting the mark, but rather it is tricking the Apple TV into displaying the logo and playing HDR10 content instead. Maybe next time read previous comments before trying to disarm someone’s post. Now you just look ignorant.

The ATV 4K supports DV Profile 5, which seems to be working with this Plex update. It’s not Imitation Dolby Vision.

It’s a shame the technique for ripping UHD BR Profile 7 DV media isn’t working, but the resulting stream is a hack. Great where it works but nonstandard.

I think Dolby is very clever, because they get to market Dolby Vision as a quality differentiator at the bottom end, and also get to continue upselling unreachable high-end capabilities.

I’m hoping Apple adds support for Profile 8.x to the current ATV 4K, although it seems more likely that they’ll release a new model.

If not ATV 4K or Shield 2019, what else can play DV in MKV? Or DV as a second layer in m2ts.

Why does this “feature” still work? This is a scam.

Any update on this? Anyone tried with the 2021 Apple TV 4K release a few days ago? (I might be able to, but I’m not sure how to check the profiles?)
