Feature Request: Export local video DB library to a file, import into new Plex installation

So I know their is hack ways to do this but it seems pretty cumbersome. I’d like an easy way in the GUI to export all my Plex DB info for all my TV and Movies and then import that into a new Plex installation.

Use case
My current Plex server breaks, I have all the movies on external hard drives. I’ve made hundreds of customizations to Plex data on the movies and TV shows on those external drives.

I build a new server, install plex and hook up the external drives, I’d like to import a single folder or file to carry over all the customizations I made on the previous server so I do not have to do them by hand again.

This could be customer cover art, correcting Moive and Tv episode info by hand, playlists etc.

I want to easily export this data and save it off in case of a disaster so I can get up and running quicker.

Any comments on this?

Well… as cumbersome as it might be. The direct way is while staying on the same type of platform is to follow this support article:

As for a migration wizard / GUI supported migration… there used to be a feature suggestion but very little interest over the years (mostly because people simply don’t migrate their servers every other day).

It really needs just on import/export xml feature for the library . A server loss could REALLY F things up for a plex user with all the fixes needed for people’s huge libraries

isn’t that what we have backups for?

If you have complete data loss on the server and have to move Plex to another server or build your server from scratch hpw can you restore it if that backup data is gone?

We need an easy to export method so that file can be stored away from the server and just imported when rebuilding or moving Plex to another server

Don’t get me wrong… I don’t want to downplay your use case.
The db backup is of course only helpful if you back it up.
That being said… from where would you export anything if the server is actually gone?! sounds more like a general gap in a backup strategy.

When it all comes down to how to create an export so you can back it up on some other drive / location. Just use the regular automatically created backup file and store that on a safe location/drive. No need to create yet another export mechanism on top of what’s already there.
