I’ve added a movie with bonus, but the bonus’ subtitles were external *.idx + *.sub subtitle files. So I converted those to a single *.srt file, and respected the naming convention as usual :
Extra title-behindthescenes.avi
Extra title-behindthescenes.fr.srt
I also tried :
Extra title-behindthescenes.avi
Extra title.fr.srt
But I can’t get the subtitles to show up during playback : they aren’t even detected.
I don’t know if I screwed somewhere or if this feature isn’t implemented yet, so I posted as a feature request.
Ok, thanks. That could be a feature request then, since not all the extras come with embedded subtitles, and having to mux them is not very convenient…
Is there anything to do to “officialize” the request, so that the team can think about it ?
You have properly named your thread already.
Only Plex Pass owners can make their request in a special forum.
But that doesn’t mean that these parts of the forum here don’t get read by the developers. If enough people chime in and voice their support for the idea, it will get noticed.
+1 for this. Just spent 20 minutes trying to make it work (VLC player plays the subtitles fine…) then found this thread. Disappointing. Would be a great feature to add! Some extras are entire shorts or hour long featurettes in and of themselves!
I would like to see this as well since I encode all of my videos into MP4 files and don’t want to have the subtitles burned in just for my movie extras.

There is a difference between ‘muxing in’ subtitles and ‘burning in’.
When you ‘mux in’ subtitles, they still are ‘soft’ subtitles, which can be activated or disabled at will.
I mux in subtitles in 2 different languages, so they get activated automatically, according to the individual language preferences of mine and my shared users.
Just trying out Plex for the first time. It’s great, but I did just spend ages trying to get a subtitle file working with extras before coming across this post! Would be great to have this feature.
