[Feature Request] Ignore Segments for Detect Intro, or Detect Multiple Intros

Some newer TV shows include arbitrary stinger intros that do not add anything to the show.

As an example, see the new Star Trek - Strange New Worlds TV show. The first 22 seconds or so of each episode is a flashy flyby of the ship, with a “Star Trek” title afterwards. It is completely superfluous and unnecessary, yet it precedes every episode.

The problem is, each of these intros is identical across all episodes, which causes Plex’s intro detection to determine this is the intro for the entire show. The actual opening credits sequence, which is what most, if not all, of us want to be detected is then missed.

There are a few possible solutions I can see.

  • Add a setting for TV Shows to “Detect when multiple intro segments are present” - this lets the intro detection pick up both this superfluous intro and the actual opening credits sequence, and add skip buttons for both.

  • Add a setting for TV Shows that allows you to tell the Intro Detection algorithm to ignore a segment of a show. This would need to be at least on a per-season basis, perhaps even per episode, because some seasons may or may not have this superfluous intro, based on when the particular service started doing this kind of intro. The setting would consist of a start time and an end time to be ignored.

  • Alternatively, you could, perhaps, add a new option to let us review and reject detected intros as the correct intro to be detected for each episode. Once a detected intro is rejected, the whole season is rescanned for intros. By default, the detected intro is used until it is rejected.

Why do I want this? Well, right now, the only workaround I have is less than ideal. I often prefer to watch with subtitles, both as a courtesy to reduce noise in certain circumstances, and because sometimes things are hard to hear or understand. In order to get Skip Intro to work correctly, I use an ffmpeg script to trim these intros off these shows. That, unfortunately, forces all subtitles to be off by the amount trimmed. My fix in this case is to manually download all the subtitles for the affected episodes, and use something like Jubler to shift the subtitles for the entire episode back an appropriate amount of time. It’s a lot of work. Features like the ones I’m requesting would make Intro Detection more flexible overall.

There’s already an existing suggestion discussing an option to deal with such additional segments or Studio prerolls. I suggest you comment/vote in that thread in order to help us avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes. Unless I’m missing some unique aspect of your suggestion I’ll close this thread as a duplicate.

LOL, someone even cites Strange New Worlds in that thread, too. No reason to keep mine open, thanks for the redirect.
