Yes, there is a How To and even a Support Article but both don’t always work (especially keeping edited metadata) - or require many manual steps.
Judging from the years of support requests/questions about this topic, there’s enough interest to warrant a renewed look at this. Can’t this be added to the User Interface to make it easier? Pretty please?
It will be nice to finally get a feature that makes it easier to manage libraries for a change!
I just switched server PCs and did the whole complicated how-to guide, which takes way too long and too much fiddling, and it didn’t work in the slightest. All of my custom posters, are gone. My custom genre tags so I can actually sort by surround sound, are gone. My movie collections, are gone.
Hours of work I’m going to have to redo because their how-to doesn’t work and they don’t collect metadata like every other media player in existence. It would be nice at least if it allowed you to save the metadata it finds into the files, but based on how the music scan doesn’t find embedded tags even when you explicitly tell it to, I don’t think that would work.
I’m still kinda new to Plex but I have some issues with metadata. For Movies I have most control with embedded metadata so rebuild is not an issue with me. TV Show I can embed meta for the individual episodes but not the shows themselves, which requires doing them manually.
I was thinking and maybe if we can have a file (kinda like how we put Poster.jpg) in the folder for the movie or TV Show which Plex can use to fill out the information. I was thinking if we had a Metadata.txt we can use as a local media asset.
For the TV Shows only the show and the seasons would have metadata.txt. Having that text file for each episodes is a lot and I’m sure most people would be happy with downloading from TMDB or TVDB for individual episodes.

I have a… let’s say shared drive that i can only read, not write nor move files on.
A lot of anime is inside of the “shows” folder… what i need is a feature that lets me pick and choose what goes into my “Anime” library, no need to move the physical files, i just want to be able to tell plex what library they go into.
Why isn’t this already a feature?
I have a lot of automation in my system for adding new content. Sometimes, content for things like “Animated Movies” or “Christmas Movies” get put into the main movies category. I’d like to be able to move them to the correct library directly from the app or web interface instead of going to my media server, finding the file and moving it to another folder. Plex admins can already delete content, so the access is there just not the option.
