[Feature Request] View movies "By original title"

This is a feature request in two parts :

  1. Currently we can see movies in 13 different ways (By title, year, release date…), but not by original title.
Unless I’m wrong, this feature should be trivial to implement, so if that’s the case then please add it soon. Thank you.

  2. If Point 1 was implemented, it would seem logical that instead of seeing titles below each movie cover we’d see original titles.

Any thoughts ? Thanks.

at the moment you can filter and sort movies like this…
what good will it do if you have your movies showing in your language but sorted in their original language?

if you want movies to show with their original title you can fix the match to apply the original language.
would you mind sharing some background on what you’d like to achieve with this feature?

This is ridiculous. I don’t think I have to justify wanting to view movies “by original title” when there are alrea y13 different ways to view them. Did all of these 13 ways have to been justified ?

I’m sure @tom80H was asking out of curiosity and not as something that is dumb/stupid as a request.

You will find alot of people question “feature requests”. Most of the time it’s just one of those why will that feature help type of thing.

Oh… Another thing I’ve seen when scanning through the PLEX database is the original title is often time blank. I know, trivial… but…fyi I guess…

@NewPlaza: Thanks for clarifying my statement…
I don’t intend to be judgmental, just trying to understand what you’re aiming for and maybe the reason why you do it to better understand if there’s maybe an alternative. But primarily to ensure I got your point.

@“Jose de la Mancha”: for clarification… do you want to filter/sort by the original title or do you want the original title to be displayed instead/alongside the local title. Just very slowly wrapping my head around… I might have been reading your request in a different way. Do you mean „sort by original title“ and only then display the original title with the given poster (instead of the local name).
Too much room for interpretation for my jumpy brain

I have interpreted on reading Feature request that what is being asked, is to add a sort/Filter, when sorted the Original Name would appear with poster. Simple to a Critic rating.
These links would be classic examples for a need for the feature.

OK, fair enough  So here’s some clarification for those who want to read it :

First of all, having a “Title” and an “Original Title” field is not ideal for 100% of the cases. Sure, it works for most movies, so most people are happy in most cases. At least for people living in english-speaking countries. Now let’s take three examples.

EXAMPLE 1 :

The well-known movie “Spirited Away” from Ghibli Studio has an original title that goes like this : 千と千尋の神隠し, Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi. Not being a japanese reader, I couldn’t care less about such a title. And the same could be said about all asian movies (e.g. the famous “Seven Samurai”).

However, for such movies, instead of the original title, I would appreciate to have the ENGLISH and the FRENCH titles, since France happens to be the country where I live (yup, not everybody lives in english-speaking countries, you know  ). So in the case of “Spirited Away”, I would appreciate to have the french title, which is “Le voyage de Chihiro” (Chihiro’s Journey).

EXAMPLE 2 :

The also well-known french movie “Amélie” has an original title that’s much more poetic : “Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain” (Amélie Poulain’s Fabulous Destiny). I for sure would like to keep that title. And since I live in France, I would even like to make that title my main title (the one used for displaying / sorting), instead of the english one.

EXAMPLE 3 :

I’m a spanish guy. I come from Spain, I just happen to live in France. I speak spanish perfectly. Now take any spanish movie, like Almodovar’s “The Skin I Live In”. I for sure would prefer the original spanish title “La piel que habito”.

This is why having a “Title” and an “Original Title” field is not ideal. A “Main Title” and “Alternate TItle” fields would be much better. Even better if we could choose “Language for Main TItle” and “Language for Alternate Title”, on a movie per movie basis.

That way, I would be really happy because :

  • For all american/british movies, I could have “Main Title” = english and “Alternate Title” = french
  • For all french movies, I could have “Main Title” = french and “Alternate Title” = english
  • For all spanish movies, I could have “Main Title” = spanish and “Alternate Title” = whatever
  • For all asian movies, I could have “Main Title” = french and “Alternate Title” = whatever

And of course I could choose to sort my movies, either by “Main Title” or by “Alternate Title”.

Do you see now how much better this could be for people like me ?

But since Plex only provides a “Title” and an “Original Title” at the moment, my purpose was/is to use the “Title” field as “Main Title” and the “Original Title” field as “Alternate Title” (by entering all the relevant data then permanently LOCKING the fields), hoping that one day Plex developers can take care of this and offer “Main Title” and “Alternate Title” fields instead (which would make 100% of the users happy with no downsides IMHO).

Judging from all your silence, I guess I convinced everybody, right ? :stuck_out_tongue:

LOL! Funny… I do like your idea but there is no way it will happen.
And if it does then WTF did you do to make that happen???

Oh, and why is that ? You see, I’m a very logical person. I believe that IF an idea is good, THEN it needs to happen. My idea is not even an idea : it’s how things SHOULD be. The current Plex settings only work for people in english-speaking countries. We are in 2018, it’s time for everybody to understand that such countries only represent a tiny fraction of the WORLD.

Proving publicly that it’s indeed a good idea. That should be enough for any logical mind.
As for the “WTF”, the “???” and other forms of harsh language, don’t lose your temper. That generally happens to people that are out of arguments, which is probably your case right now BTW.

You should interpret my silence as „understood where you’re coming from / what you’re aiming at“. I don’t see the need / use case for myself… hence no Like but also no down-voting or fighting over it.

And by the way… I’m no native English speaker and I do have my library organized in local language (with a few exceptions where I willingly bought an English version of a movie / show)

LOL! It’s your request and I agreed with you. Oh well guess you can’t take a joke, my bad.

@NewPlaza : oh well, sorry then. As you may have understood by now, engilsh is not my main language, so I sometimes have trouble with jokes, slang, etc… My bad.

I just think, in a naïve way, that my idea is indeed a good idea for EVERYBODY. No downsides at all for english native speakers, and plenty of benefits for fhe others ! So yes, I think it should be implemented.

You idea does sound cool… It’d be a nice addition to have in PLEX.

Lets wait for the new forums releasing soon to see if your feature request has consensus, I do agree that it’s a good idea.

I have now made a proper topic in the Feature Suggestions forum : Choose languages for both title fields, on a movie-per-movie basis

Feel free to go there and vote ! Thank you.
