Feature suggestion: Would like option to not use file metadata

Server Version#:Not server-specific
Player Version#: Not client-specific

When you copy a media file into PMS’s storage and you have automatic scanning turned on, PMS extracts metadata from the media file (title, etc) and uses the embedded title metadata vs the filename as the title. Here’s the problem: Many media files contain rubbish titles and other metadata which I don’t want to see. Consequently, I have to manually edit erroneous extracted data within Plex.; this is really tiresome when you’re copying dozens of titles into the PMS storage.

I would like an Extract-Metadata-From-Media-File setting in Plex (Settings | Server | Library)that allows me to opt-out of that behavior. By default, the setting should be enabled to preserve the existing behavior. Turning it off would not use any metadata within the file but, rather, use the filename as the title.

Try for a start, to move the Local Media Assets to the bottom of the primary agent

Would this work for posters and background art? I have a Sports folder and don’t want any pictures of the video included to prevent spoilers.

It’s for local assets, aka locally stored jpg’s etc

You can also remove those rubbish metadata from your files.
Or put in reasonable metadata.

Tried it. Didn’t help.

Extremely time-consuming and counter-productive.

Depends wholly on the type of file and the available software.
mp3tag for instance can set metadata on several files at once. It can even extract (parts) of the file name and put them into various different meta tags.

After changing the order, you must ‘Refresh Metadata’.
It will however only make a difference if the file is ‘matched’ to an online metadata agent.
If your files are ‘unmatchable’, you will either have to disable the Local Media Assets agent or remove the metadata from the files prior to putting them into Plex.

Simply removing metadata can be done with several software solutions, also on many files in batches.

Have you actually tried running mp3tag on large mp4 files? I have. It’s ungodly slow. I can’t do that for hundreds of files.
