Fighting the plex agent with Battlestar Galactica (modern)

Server Version#: 4.147.1

I’m trying to upload files from the Battlestar Galactica (modern version) complete series box set and am struggling to get name and structure things in a way that appeases Plex. The tl;dr is I’m completely lost as to what the devil the agent wants and am hoping there is a lookup/search where I can type in “Battlestar Galactica” and see how Plex wants things to be named/structured. In the past I used to use thetvdb.com for naming things and that generally worked ok but with this series that strategy is not working and I’m really left guessing randomly.

For example, I had to create two top level root directories to house the mini-series and the episodic show separately. Makes no sense since it is the same show. What’s worse is I had to add tmdb hints in the file names to get the agent to match things otherwise nothing worked:

Battlestar Galactica (2003) {tmdb-71365}

Battlestar Galactica (2004) {tmdb-1972}

With that, I then had to put the mini-series under “season1” for the 2003 named directory. That got the mini-series showing up, albeit separate from the main show.

But what do I do with the movies like “The Plan”? tvdb says it is a special named with S00E22 but that’s not working. I feel like having a way to search whatever the agent is using to discover how to name things would be a big help.

“Episode ordering”

Plex uses by default the episode ordering from TheMovieDB.
You can switch this default for the whole library to TheTVDB (Aired).
And on every individual tv show you can override the default.
Look up the show on both TheMovieDB and TheTVDB. Pick whatever suits the show in question better. Name and number the files accordingly.

After the series appears in the library, edit it and set the intended Episode Ordering, if it’s different from the library default.
Refresh Metadata of the whole show.
Look at the result.

Try setting up your folder/files like this:

Battlestar Galactica (2003) {tvdb-73545}
Specials
Battlestar Galactica (2003) - S00E01 - Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries (1)
Battlestar Galactica (2003) - S00E02 - Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries (2)
Battlestar Galactica (2003) - S00E22 - Battlestar Galactica: The Plan
Season 01
Battlestar Galactica (2003) - S01E01 - 33
Season 02
Battlestar Galactica (2003) - S02E02 - Scattered

And so on. You’ll probably need to do the Plex dance to clear up the database. Once everything is set up, click on Battlestar Galactica and then click on Edit→Advanced and under Episode Ordering, select TVDB(aired)

For some odd reason, if I don’t add the tvdb id, I can only select TMDB episode ordering.

Yeah, I think part of my problem is I don’t see the dropdown to change the agent/ordering to use at the show level. I don’t want the whole library to be set to TVDB Aired which the option is there

You don’t change the agent. You only change the Episode Ordering.

Ensure that you are at the top level of the show. Easiest by clicking on the show title.

I just have my agent set to Plex Agent, which default to TMDB. I don’t have any legacy agents selected. From your initial description, it sounded like TVDB episode ordering would be more what you were looking for.

If you just wanted to only use TMDB metadata, you’d need a folder for the minseries, a folder for the regular series and put any movie like The Plan under Movies

I think the “Plex Dance” helped. Somehow it’s recognizing things. Seems pretty hit or miss at times like I’m “appeasing the gods” lol

Yep, the Plex Dance definitely helps when you’re trying to nail down the correct episodes names/ordering. After I mess around enough with a given show, I’ll end up with a mish-mash of metadata for that show. Doing the Plex Dance lets Plex tidy up after itself once I’m happy with everything.
