I just ripped four blu ray disks. Each disk contains one file. Each file contains 1 to 5 TV programs. Because the TV programs in these files are not sequential, I cannot use the recommended episode-numbering system for these files. Therefore, I am hoping someone can recommend a file-splitting app. I found one called Wondershare Filmora, but don’t know whether it will work and is safe to download to my Mac. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
I would just use mkvtoolnix
Thanks. I’ll give that a try.
When I tried to use mkvtoolnix this morning, the screens that appeared on my computer are not the same as the screens shown in the instructions for the software. Perhaps the problem is that my Mac’s OS is 10.13.6. In any event, I will try something else. Thanks again for your help.
You can try a program called Handbrake. I use this mostly for decreasing files size while keeping the original quality but it also has the ability to split or merge videos.
It’s reasonably easy to use and there are tons of tutorials on youtube.

Tutorial for splitting videos

Initial setup might seem a little intimidating but if you spend a few minutes to get it up and running it’s a very useful program.
The underlying features should be the same… the look and feel of the app might be a bit different on various platforms (and changing over time).
After selecting the Split mode, the next field has a detailed tooltip on what parameters are expected/allowed/possible.
Hello to all. I found a tutorial by EposVox, who put me on the right path with mkvtoolnix. The split files are looking pretty good now. Thanks for your help.
Point of order?
-
Handbrake re-encodes. It does not remux. Any re-encoding process loses quality by definition.
-
Mkvtoolnix will perform actual remux (multiplex) and allow tracks to be added, removed, samples taken, as well as reordering the streams during the filtering process… and it’s fast. It does not alter any stream contents, it works using timecodes and stream ID only.
-
FFMPEG will also split files. The easiest method is by time code.
