Files Become 0 Bytes and Removed from Library Randomly (Red Trash Can) Shield Pro Ext. HDD ExFat

I’m using the latest Plex server with a Western Digital external HDD (16TB) with roughly 250 Movie Files loaded through a Nvidia Shield Pro into a LG G3 TV.

Everything is Awesome!.. 4K Cinema, Surround Sound, transcoding and loading is all good! the lot, I’m happy…However the one thing that everyone hates is happening, and keeps happening: Data Loss.

Randomly movies are going from a normal say 80-100GB size down to 0 bytes and a trash can is shown on the movie tile in Plex and can’t be played (Data Loss). I deliberately signed up because I couldn’t find anything online for a month searching about this…The WD drive is formatted ExFat and I’m a bit miffed and can’t figure it out.

Server Version#: 4.132.3

ExFat is a non-journaling filesystem, and is known for having corruptions that can not be repaired

This is not related to Plex.

I can only recommend you switch filesystem to like NTFS or Ext4 depending on your environment

Great, thanks for the tip. I’ll reformat the drive and see, however people online have said the opposite and encountered issues with NTFS also…But at least I can give this a try…Thanks!

This ended up not solving the Plex issue… I bought a new WD 16 TB HDD formatted NTFS and had exactly the same issue happen with my media movies when connected to Plex. It’s clearly not a drive issue. Files play fine though LG G3 TV. Issue unfortunately is with Plex.

Plex do NOT change file size of medias to 0 bytes!

So this NOT a Plex issue

Are you perhaps detaching the HDD from your shield or PC simply by unplugging the drive?

This could be it, I’ve had to transfer files across, I might have all the movies on the drive and then attach it and leave it. Thank you.

You are welcome, and still suggest not using ExFat!

And you need to detach the USB drive properly, in order to make sure all write actions are actually written, and not just in cache

Cheers!

You can enable file sharing on the Nvidia Shield, then transfer files from your PC to the Shield over the network.

Doing so would alleviate the need to connect/disconnect the USB drive.
