Find where to watch something with "Discover" and your "Watchlist"

Thanks, just saw now my app was on v8 not v8.1. Thanks again

#watchlist - Currently only finds about 10 items… as “trending” so that’s not too useful

  • Would be nice to have plex find\suggest movies\tv within my other services based on genres\actors or other generic types of non-privacy violating searches

  • If not based on my data - having a genre pick list or “do you like things like these” with suggestions of movies\tv shows etc

  • If I watch something with Ryan Reynolds in it, suggest other media from my existing media, my subscribed services which has ryan reynolds associated, or similar genre’s

One feature I do like about Chromecast for Google TV / AndroidTV discover is that it lets you train it with thumbs up, thumbs down (or skip for when you don’t know what it is), either via the page for the tv/movie or via a content preference rating thing . Ultimately that would be nice, although I suppose it could also do it passively via fit to previous watched status or something.

(Google also is making recommendations based on snooping of google search results e.g. I searched for a few obscure movies today and upon opening the content preference screen on Chromecast it was asking me about those…)

I’ve noticed a couple of issues on the Android app.

TVNZ OnDemand (a New Zealand streaming service) opens Google Play when I click watch on, despite me having it installed.

It seems shows with large numbers of seasons (e.g. Top Gear) only show 20 seasons in the slider.

I can see myself farting around with this “feature” a bit. It’s semi useful for suggestions of things to watch… but here are some downsides for me.

  1. I’m a Roku user for the most part, so no links to outside apps work for me
  2. As a pretty hardcore Plex user, I therefore don’t have a lot of subscriptions to other online services
  3. It’s suggesting lots of links to things I’m not subscribed to
  4. It’s really borking my search results
  5. I can’t turn it off

So, I’ll end up using this like most of my larger library brothers… as only suggestions for things I should download. It doesn’t work for me to use it as a navigation tool, so it’s really only a novelty at this point.

It seems to be working pretty well for me. One problem I have with streaming services is that I have Netflix, Prime, HBO+, and Apple+ as separate services, but I have Britbox and Acorn as “Channels” on Prime. With Plex I have to log in to Britbox and Acorn but I can’t because they are Channels and not subscriptions. Normally I subscribe to services through their own providers, but my wife and I watch so much Acorn and Britbox that it’s easier to have them as “Channels.”
That’s something I can do simply by changing how I subscribe but it would be nice if you could find those “Channels” in Prime.
Other than that it works very well, particularly for a Beta.

There is an issue with Netflix as a Discover source: A lot of the shows/movies that are available on Netflix in Germany do not show up in Discover for Netflix. I can find the movies/shows, but Netflix isn’t listed as a source. Not sure why, maybe it has something to do with the location, but I doubt it, as some of the things I looked for are also available on Netflix in the US.

If a dev wants to take a look, one example would be the documentary movie “13th”.

Another user here with iOS app (iPhone in my case) not remembering the services I just painstakingly went through and tagged…

It seems that the AppleTV app doesn’t save the selected services s well. I tried it over and over again but the choices just don’t stick.

Saw that too.
Just a message (sometimes only half the message) saying “Sorry, app linking isn’t working right now. Launch the app directly”.

If they can make it to show what episode you are on, thatd rule. It would take the place of TV TIME.

I took the features for a test ride and made quick video talking about them.

is there any way to import a .csv file watchlist from others platforms?

I made a suggestion in that subforum for that as I have the same problem. For some services using Apple+ or Prime “channels” is preferable either because the streaming app is bad or it’s not good at delivering video. Paramount plus was ok as an app but it would constantly drop quality here (despite 1gbps internet) , whereas using the same channel on Apple it was fine.

No, there’s no import option for the watchlist.

I just pulled my vote from one of my long-time favorites to vote for this:

I like it. I’ve needed a Watchlist. This looks great.

I have one request: Add ability to filter by streaming service. I don’t maintain continuous subscriptions, but rather move from one to another (or two or three or …) every so often. It would be useful to be able to filter the Watchlist to only show what is available on a specific streaming service (or list).

Excellent work, sir!

The TV Show Shameless doesn’t show that it is available on Netflix, even though it is. Not a huge problem, but if this is happening with this show, it’s probably doing that with others.

I’ll repeat what I posted in another thread:

I would really prefer if the additional “More ways to watch” results that now appear when searching for an item could be turned off.

The thing I do really like from these newly introduced functionalities is the Discover tab. I’ll probably also use the new Watchlist, but I still need to play with it more to see if it really can be useful to me.

A lot of these new functionalities are great, but why not give us settings to customize the experience according to our own use case? Some settings, like the ability to turn off the “More ways to watch” search results for example, would make a huge difference in the overall experience.
