Find where to watch something with "Discover" and your "Watchlist"

Thank you plex

Just make your client is up to date and new features will show up eventually sooner or later.

Testing but the Trailers do not seem to work. Sometimes you hear the trailer audio but no video and it takes forever to load the trailers, just getting a circling icon.

In can’t find the streaming services in settings. Have Plex Pass and latest beta.
What do I need to enable?

They should be right there, in your account settings. https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/streaming-services

Clicking SELECT MY STREAMING SERVICES in Plex Web pops up the modal window for a split second and closes it, while any subsequent clicks do nothing.

In iOS at first, the same behavior would pop up the modal, but it would be empty. When I went to try again now, the Discover section just disappeared completely from the app.

Can we get some information on regional availability since it seems this doesn’t work everywhere?

Great feature. I use a similar app JustWatch, which does the same as discover - but without Plex integration. So I’m stoked.
I’m a lifetimer in NZ running AppleTV, web, ios and sony bravia. I can only access the new features via the web app.

Any thoughts?

Thanks Otto. That link worked.
A couple of services HBOMax it won’t enter directly when choosing a title and Youtube Premium needs to be just Youtube for in the AppStore of AppleTV.

Just make sure clients are updated and give it a time and it will show eventually. I am waiting on my Fire TV which is on older version and hopefully will see the update soon as it is already pushed by devs.

If you want to know exact versions clients will need then do refer here: Discover Source (Beta) | Plex Support

This is a fantastic feature and so close to being useful, however IMO it’s currently missing one, massively important bit of functionality:

It needs to integrate with the Continue Watching list on the Home Screen. Having to pop into a different tab, find the show and the episode you want creates the kind of hassle this feature is aiming to alleviate. Find a way to make the two things play nice and you’ve got a killer feature here.

If this allows my parents to both SEARCH and WATCH anything using Plex as their portal, that would be great! If it is search only, it will more than likely be more confusing for them because they will not understand why they cannot click on what they found and watch it – that’s assuming they will need to exit Plex, start another streaming service app, locate the show and then, finally, watch it. I think that the blog entry about this feature says that they can click on the search result in plex to directly play something from the search results, but after plex discontinued all of the wonderful plug-ins for apps from other streaming services some time ago, that seems unlikely.

Honestly just trying to understand what this really does to decide if I should set it up for my 80+ year old, somewhat techno-phobic parents.

That’s exactly how it works on certain platforms. However, unfortunately not all platforms or apps support this kind of “deep-linking”.
Roku for instance prohibit it in general atm.

That is true, but, there are in fact several streaming services available in my area. All the major ones.

I like this new feature, bringing all major stream platform into one.

Could we enable this feature for a managed plex home members too?
Not only available on the main home admin user

Thanks

Having spent the evening playing with this, I think it’s a great beta feature, and does what it says on the tin (Discovery of new stuff, and a universal place to store all the stuff)

Based on the current functionality, I only see it useful for movies, as I feel TV watching in it’s current state is quite laborious.

I hope this feature will grow over time, below is my hope/wish list.

  • When searching, only display content I’ve added to my service provider (maybe a ‘not available for streaming, want to buy/rent?’ with links to the other services)
  • Option to filter the Watchlist by Unwatched and Available (this should hide loads of TV shows I’ve watched, but have on Watchlist awaiting the next season)
  • Option to create playlist. eg, Service = Netflix, Watchlist = true, Play Count = 0
  • If we’ve manually marked TV shows as watched, the next episodes appears in Continue Watching
  • Improvements to the search functionality. eg. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (doesn’t appear in search under Star Trek, but does under Strange New)

Nice to have options, however I understand there’s privacy issues (opt-in consent maybe?)

  • Sync with services to update watch status in both Plex and ‘service’ (as Roku, AppleTV, Nvidia Shield seem to be currently able to do)
  • Option to have Plex ‘phone PMS’ to allow updates via Trakt.tv webhook (this would reduce the overhead of marking an episode as watched in both Plex and on the Trakt site.)

It appears that unfortunately there are currently no Plex-supported streaming services in your geographic location.

This sounded really exciting, unfortunately, I tried it out on my LG Smart TV and I’m not too impressed.

Sure, it’s great that you can search for something in Plex and be informed what streaming service it’s available in which is nifty (but not really new, justwatch.com does this too), but I just get this message when I’m trying to watch something:

“Linking to content within other apps is currently unavailable. You will unfortunately have to go direct to the correct app to play this content. Below is a list of where you can watch this content.”

That means there’s no reason for me to search for it in Plex to begin with, unless I don’t already know where to find it.

This means I’m not going to use it, it’s just not useful enough in its current state.

  1. It shows that I have the show on my Diskstation when in Discover Mode. But It does not show streaming services if in “TV Shows” or “Movies” Library from the Diskstation.

  2. I cant login on my streaming services. So it does not sync my watched list. This would be the killer feature for me …

I’m in the UK and I have a lifetime pass. Discover nor Streaming Services have appeared in my Server Settings. I’ve closed and opened the app and logged out and in again. I’m now waiting patiently.

Will this new service be included in the Lifetime Pass or will I have to pay £4.99/month for it once it’s out of beta?

Users are discussing for this here: Discover for Managed Users?
As of now it isn’t but let’s see how things shape in future.
