Everything was working fine, I was remotely connected to my PC trying to set up pre-roll video for PMS when all of a sudden I couldn’t get a connection remotely. Once I got home I realized my computer internet wasn’t functioning properly. I rebooted router, reset factory router, uninstalled and reinstalled network adapter drivers, switched out ethernet cords, tried 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi bands. Still not working. I realized through Trial and Error that this internet connectivity issue would only occur if PMS was running, with one caveat. If I turn off Ethernet adapter and connect wifi to my phone’s hotspot I still have access to internet with PMS running. I tinkered with router settings, I turned Firewall completely off. made sure inbound and outbound rules were set for PMS. Still on Home Network no internet if PMS is running. I even uninstalled PMS and reinstalled. I deleted registry keys except those “identifiers” and a few others to try and bring PMS to Default Server settings in hope that might fix the issue. I am stumped and have no idea what to do next.
I did discover that if I turn off FiOS Home Network Protection from the FiOS Mobile App that PMS works fine and Internet connection is good. Contacting FiOS Support about this is leading nowhere.
I don’t see anything definite, but I’m unsure which network state the logfile is from… is this an attempt to use Plex through your ethernet and normal internet connection, or wifi through hotspot? I’m seeing two network connections turned on, but you said that in the hotspot test you had ethernet off. One connection is for ethernet (192.168.1.x) and one for wifi (192.168.43.x), and Plex is switching back and forth on which is the primary network interface. It’s getting internet traffic on the wifi connection, but not on the ethernet connection. I don’t know your network topology, but if both are supposed to be connections to your LAN it is a bit unusual that the two are on different subnets.
A few items to try:
If this is supposed to be the example of Plex using ethernet and failing, then can you turn off your wifi, restart, test, and post logs again?
Turn off IPv6 in Plex (under Settings -> Network).
Test your internet connection speed through ethernet when you have Plex turned off and your internet is working. Verify you are getting expected transfer rates. It’s possible you are getting a slow internet connection that is getting easily saturated.
Thanks for the reply. I believe this log was ethernet and the Wifi Adapter was also turned on. It’s possible that when the ethernet dropped due to PMS issue it attemted to use the connected WiFi. I only attempted the hotspot once early on to verify the PMS was having issues with my home network.
I had ipv6 turned off at one point to test if that was the issue. I even turned ipv6 off in the adapter properties for both ethernet and wifi.
I ran many speed tests every speed test i ran with PMS off was around 500-800mbps (D) and 600-900mbps (U).
I’ll test with WiFi off and post new logs when i have a chance.
As i said in above reply. It’s working fine as long as FiOS Home Network Protection if off. It seems to me like its not allowing traffic through if it’s on and PMS is on.
I didn’t see your second post until just now. I don’t have Verizon FIOS, but provider network protection services tend to be targeted at the majority who just want to surf the net and stream from internet services. They often interfere when the user is trying to do something more, like serving content from the home network.
Since you have determined the root of the problem, I’ll defer to others that may have more insight into the this particular home network protection.
I have Verizon Fios and started having problems last night with Plex. I could no longer play Plex Music to my Sonos. I thought it was my Sonos, but other services worked fine. Then I realized that Plex wasn’t accessible remotely. I tried rebooting the router, turning on/off UpnP, tried manual port forwarding. Nothing worked.
Also found that my Synology NAS could no longer be accessed via QuickConnect (remotely) when Plex was running. I will try to disable the protection services.
It looks like my Plex server is accessible at the moment (10:30 EST), but it wasn’t just a few hours ago. I don’t know if Verizon pushed an update or if something happened on the Plex backend.
I tried rebooting the router, the ONT… none of it made a difference. And for me at least, it started at about 7PM EST, because I can see that someone was streaming a show up until then (and was not finished) and I was having trouble playing music on Sonos shortly after.
Update: Not working again at 10:40 AM EST
Update: Turned off Verizon Home Network Protection from my phone and Plex is available. I see I have 20 notifications that show my Synology NAS tried to access an ip.address.plex.tv but we blocked it. I’ll see if it stays up for the rest of the day now.
I have the same exact issue with Fios network protection as everybody here. Does anybody know what the danger of turning network protection setting off is?
It looks to just be real time monitoring and control of connected devices. I get notifications when a new device connects to network. I can add devices to profiles and shut down full profiles etc. I really think it’s just a real time monitoring service. I use it to shut down my kids devices when they are grounded…
I was using it to block internet from specific devices in my house when my kids were grounded. It does also protect you from surfing and hitting some phishing or potentially malicious sites. Though it seems like it can be over zealous at this.
I don’t know why Plex was falling into this category all of a sudden. I haven’t tried to see if there is any way to whitelist sites / domains to let some through. I had notifications that said it was specifically blocking 2 plex.direct addresses, one of which related back to my Synology NAS. I turned Home Networking Services back on now and chose the “Allow” option to see if it will now let future requests from there go through.
I’ll see if this works or if it eventually gets blocked from remote access again.
I turned my FiOS home network protection back on. It’s working remotely. But I cannot access Plex through a web browser on the PC that PMS is running on. Also I get a notification from FiOS app on my phone when certain devices are using Plex that the device tried to access a malicious site and lists a Plex url… So FiOS certainly is trying to limit Plex usage it seems… Bandwidth screening I guess…
I’ve now replaced the Fios router that Verizon provides with a Synology router. Had to do the usual port-forward of the Plex port, but after that everything was smooth: Everything is working now even with Synology’s various threat-prevention, firewall, and safe browsing options turned on. External and in-network Plex access working great. Added bonus: A slightly faster and more stable Internet connection and slightly better WiFi coverage in the house. My various networked smart-home devices seem to have a more stable connection as well… And the router UI is nicer. I’ve only been testing the new setup for a couple of days though, so time will tell.
I guess the silver lining of this whole fiasco is that Plex getting blocked by the Fios’ router network-protection software finally motivated me to upgrade routers.
Plex should pop a warning up on every user connecting with Fios, explaining what they need to do… I never would’ve figured this problem out if I hadn’t found this forum thread.
I ran into the same issue with FIOS network protection. Let me also note that it was nearly killing the internet connection for my home server, not just impacting Plex. So it wouldn’t download updates from Ubuntu, Crashplan wouldn’t connect reliably for backups, etc… a basic ping test would drop 50-70% of its packets.
Confirmed here too. Verizon network home protection on FIOS was blocking Plex. I turned it off then back on again and all seems OK. If it blocks again I’ll turn it back off.
I’m on FIOS and I’m experiencing the very same thing. When I relaunch the server, it will be available for a few minutes, then I can’t connect to it anymore, even in the web player running on the same machine.
I have the FIOS app and did open it. For the life of me, I cannot see this “Verizon Network Home Protection” on my iPhone. Where is this setting???
