[FIOS] Internet Connected but no access to Internet while PMS is running

I have the FIOS Mobile App but I can’t find this Home Network Protection. Where is this setting?

@nemesyssoft In the “My Fios” iOS app I see the setting on the homepage of the app, 3rd banner down, labeled “Internet: Manage Your Hoke Network Protection.” Click that to go into the internet settings, and about halfway down the page is a section called “Devices & Parental Controls.” In that small section Home Network Protection should be listed.

I couldn’t find a way to do this via the Verizon site or the web-browser interface for the Fios router settings — the iOS app was the only place I could find the option to switch it off.

We’re talking about the iPhone app “My Fios”, right? I don’t see this setting you’re talking about. When I launch the app, this is the screen I get:

When I tap “Internet”, that’s the screen I get:

I don’t understand…

Is it possible that this setting is determined by the router model you have? You can see the model I have, it’s an old model. On the second screen, Verizon tries to push me to an updated model which has, among other things, “Parental Controls”…

@nemesyssoft Yeah, you’re looking in the right place, but the option in question is missing on your “Internet” page in the app… It looks like your router doesn’t have access to the network protection/parental controls.

Also, I think you should probably delete the second screenshot from your post above — I can totally see your router password even though you blacked it out… The blackout is translucent.

Thank you. Didn’t realize the password was still visible. I will contact Verizon tomorrow. Maybe they can turn that off for me. I have no interest in upgrading my router for $12 more each month just to be able to disable this stupid feature.

@nemesyssoft I could be wrong, but the way I understand it, the option can only be on if you’re on their upgraded router, so I’m not sure how this issue is impacting you if you’re not actually on their router with access to the home network security system… Fios might be doing something tricky, or it could be a different router issue.

But, yeah, don’t pay them $12 a month for the upgraded router. If you spend any money on a router it’s almost always best in the long term to buy your own router instead of using the router provided by one’s internet provider — so you don’t have to pay their monthly router fees, so you can get a much better router, and to avoid general weirdness like this. Previously I had a great experience using an old refurbished Apple Airport Extreme router with FiOS, and now the new Synology router I got is working great with FiOS. All the problems I ran into were when I fell for trying out the FiOS-provided router after I’d had the line upgraded. As long as FiOS has the Ethernet-out port enabled on the ONT box (and if they don’t they should enable that for you for free) you should be able to plug any router straight in there. (The setup gets a bit more complex if you’re using a router to connect landline-phone and cable TV to your house, though; in that case the internet provider may require their hardware to descramble the TV channels, or you’ll need to make sure to get hardware that supports it, etc… And with some Internet providers you’ll also need your own modem in the chain — but not with FiOS where you should be able to jack right into the ONT. In terms of typical Internet access, switching out the router should be pretty plug-and-play.)

Thanks, I didn’t know you could use your own router. I’m using Airport Extreme base stations. Sadly, I don’t think I could replace the existing router because I’m also getting Fios TV and landline phone service. But even with my own router, I would still have the issue. I’m going to contact Verizon today and find out.

UPDATE: I called Verizon technical support today and they connected me with the Home Networking Protection team. They confirmed it was on for my account. I asked them to turn it off. Then, the call was dropped! But! My Plex Media Server seems to be back. I’m currently playing a movie right now.

Thanks to those who provided this hint about this infamous “Home Networking Protection”.
