Fire TV not Advertising as Player; Cannot connect from remote/companion app

Server Version#: 1.31.1.6733
Player Version#: 9.16.1.38616

I am running 9.16.1.38616 on my Amazon Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) on Fire OS 7.6.1.3 / Fire TV Home Version 6390026.1.

When running iOS Plex Application (8.16) on my iPad or iPhone, and via the Web app, none of the players can discover the Fire TV Plex app. The web app displays “No players found” when attempting to connect.

The FireTV Cube, iPad, iPhone are connected via WiFi, on the same subnet & to firewalls are between them.

My Plex server is running 1.31.1.6733 on Windows 10.

My FireTV, iPad, iPhone & web players can all play content from my Plex server without issue.

Is there a way to get the Fire TV Plex app to advertise as a player?

@moderators any feedback on this?

Here are my FireTV and iOS logs. Note that I do have an older FireTV named “Bedroom” that is working.

When I hit https://plex.tv/api/resources?X-Plex-Token=, I can see my 2 other FireTV devices (Bedroom & Office.) I installed the Plex App on these long ago. I’m running the new device (FireCube) and it is on the same software (9.19.1.525) and network as the 2 other FireTV devices.

I noticed on installing Plex App this time around, it glitched in building my home screen. I had to restart the Plex app on the FireCube. My suspicion is something glitched in registering it.

I’ve attached the resources XML response.
resources.zip (1.0 KB)

To test if it was an installation glitch, I did the following: Under Setting → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → Plex:

  • Force Stop
  • Clear Data
  • Clear Cache
  • Uninstall App
Then reboot FireTV, reinstalled Plex App, logged in, renamed Friendly Name to “FireCube”, Enabled Network Logging, played a TV Show to verify function.

The Resources.xml from above has not changed. The logs from the freshly installed player is below.

Have the same problem with a Nvidia shield. Every other device is working fine and can be controlled. There is even a setting in the apps on other devices for this only on the Nvidia shield there is not. Maybe this helps you, for me it did nothing: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201812803-plex-companion-remote-control-issues/

Know issue for the shield. Post here…

I have verified the issue is occurring on all/every new installation of Plex App on FireTV. I was able to cast to my Office & Bedroom FireTV apps (but not the new Livingroom FireCube.) I reset the Office to factory settings, installed the Plex App and cannot cast to it. It no longer shows in my MediaContainers XML call.

Seems older installations of the Plex App enabled the casting and registered as a player Something has changed in newer FireTV Plex App versions that are failing to register as a player.

This is replicatable 100% of the time on the current app version.

Thanks for this discovery, hopefully that means it can be finally detected and fixed. @anon18523487 are you able to replicate as above?

Hi @anon18523487 any updates on this. The above post is universal for all these casting problems with Android and Fire TV platforms.

I have verified the May 2 release (9.21.1.169) does not correct the issue. I deleted all data and cache, uninstalled and reinstalled the app and no change.

Hi @anon18523487 further to the Nvidia Shield thread, this is where the troubleshooting managed to reproduce the issue. As always, thanks a lot for your support. I appreciate it.

Same exact problem, with Amazon Fire TV Stick (3rd Gen) on Fire OS 7.6.3.3 / Fire TV Home Version 6450027.1.

Server version 1.32.1.6999
Player version 9.21.2.1271

Doesn’t show in “Connect to Device” in order to fling from other players. Does not register for display in XML. Can play content without issue, but cannot be controlled by other players.

Thanks for any help on this issue.

Uninstall & re-install of June 5th release (9.23.0.1746) does not resolve the issue.

Same issue here. Running
Plex Media Server 1.32.3.7162 on Synology NAS
Plex Client 9.23.0.1746 on Amazon Fire TV Stick light
Just as described by f15hb0wn, Fire TV does not show up in …/clients listing on the server, and cannot be flinged to / controlled from my Android phone or Plex web.
Would be great if we can get a fix, family is unhappy

Server Version#: 1.32.3.7192
Player Version#: 9.23.0.1746

I recently upgraded from an older generation Fire TV Stick to the latest generation Fire TV Stick (non-Lite, non-4k, non-Cube) and noticed the same issue right from the start. I am not able to select this device as a player from any other instance of Plex. Other apps such as YouTube are able to cast to the Fire TV Stick without problem.

I don’t see any acknowledgement of the issue by Plex staff within this thread, but has any progress been identified in the other thread mentioned (re: Nvidia Shield)? It appears this has been an issue for quite some time.

Here…

The fix should be in the next release, 9.26.
