FireStick Plex Remote Control not working

Server Version#: 1.30.1.6497
Player Version#: 9.13.1.37459

I have 2 FireStick (4K and 4K Max). Neither one can be selected as a fling target. I went through flinging doc and forum search without any results.

The clients XML won’t list them:
https://IP:32400/clients?X-Plex-Token=TOKEN

<MediaContainer size="0"> </MediaContainer>

Although, if I enable “Advertise as Player” on Android phone app, this one would appear in clients XML.

I couldn’t find the “Advertise as Player” setting in FireTV. Does this means that this feature is simply not available on FireTV. Or it’s rather always enabled (but not working)?

I don’t think this is an issue with the Fire Stick itself. I’m not getting any options to remote control other players. I can Chromecast to them, but all the Plex player flinging options are missing.

Also I have that stupid Sonos option when I have no such device.

App version 9.13.1.37459

@moderators any help from Plex?

An update on this:

I opened the Plex HTPC app on a desktop, and the Plex app on my Fire Stick 4k Max. The HTPC app is still showing up as a remote control option on both the Plex web interface and on the Android app.

So the issue isn’t with the remote control itself, seems to be just Android apps being targets for control.

I’m having the same issue. iOS & Web App are not able to see the FireTV app to use as a player. Fire TV not Advertising as Player

@moderators any feedback on this?

Some feedback here

I’m not aware of an issue with Fire TV devices. It’s working for me. 2 things to check.

1 - app is running
2 - you are not using a kid profile

Amazon does strange things when using a kids profile. I haven’t checked that recently, but that profile has caused issues in the past.

If you saw my last post on this thread. You can see I have two devices listed for Chromecasting, a TV and a Shield Pro.

I’m sitting here on my couch right now with the Plex app (9.17.0.38861) open on my Shield Pro (2019) and this is what my Android phone shows:

This is not something you can blame on Amazon I’m afraid.

Now I’m launching the Plex app (same version number) on the TV, and rechecking my phone…

All these devices are on the same network, so it’s not a router issue.

Edit: To add additional details…

The TV is wired to the router, the Shield Pro and Fire Sticks are wireless. But Chromecasting works fine on both the TV and the Shield Pro despite their different connection methods.

Thanks. I’ll include the Fire TV as a device to check. Could you retry using the Fire TV and get me logs from that and from the Plex App on your phone?

I uploaded my logs here: Fire TV not Advertising as Player; Cannot connect from remote/companion app - #4 by f15hb0wn

Launched a Plex HTPC app on a laptop, and the app on my Fire Stick 4K Max, and then checked the app on my phone. Only the app on the laptop was an available target for control.

I’m also having this issue. I wanted to run a script for auto skipping intros, which relied on the ‘advertise as player’ setting but my Firestick just doesn’t advertise it. I’ve tried older versions, even the newest one released today (v9.19) but nothing. It doesn’t appear in my clients list and also shows ‘MediaContainer size=“0”> </MediaContainer’ when pointing to it directly.

It works just fine using Plex for Windows (v1.41.0.2876-e960c9ca). I can see my PC via the Android app on my phone and it connects just fine.

I can confirm the March 30, 2023 update to the FireOS/Android app has not corrected the failure to advertise issue. Older FireTV sticks do still advertise.

I just uploaded additional logs and comments: Fire TV not Advertising as Player; Cannot connect from remote/companion app - #6 by f15hb0wn

I just just performed a re-install of the Plex App and uploaded the logs here: Fire TV not Advertising as Player; Cannot connect from remote/companion app - #7 by f15hb0wn. I remember there being an “Advertise…” option in older versions of the player app. With that missing, could it be the newer installations have defaulted to having “Advertise as player” as off with no way to enable it? If so, it would explain why my older FireTV devices running the same version of software on the same network allow Remote control (I must have enabled it before the option was removed or it was defaulted on).

I had a device (OfficeTV) that was working. I installed the Plex App on it more than 2 years ago. It was showing in the MediaContainer XML. I reset that FireTV to factory settings, did not apply a restore of settings and reinstalled the Plex App. It no longer shows in XML and is not a cast option.

My FireTV devices that had Plex installed more than a year ago still work and are on the same app version work.

Seems there is an issue in the newer FireTV Plex app releases that prevent it from publishing itself as a player.

This can be replicated 100% of the time on the current app version.

@anon18523487 , were the logs helpful? Anything additional we can provide? Any guidance on a fix?

We think we found the issue. Will provide more info when I can.

Android TV and HTPC also have this problem.
