Firestick - cannot see movie folders

Server Version#:1.9.6.4429-23901a099
Player Version#: Fire TV Stick 7.25.1.14216

This used to work fine and then stopped. I assume some bug was introduced via Plex. I believe I’ve tried every option to get it to reappear. I can’t see how this wasn’t spotted during testing. Plex is almost useless without this feature.

Do you mean the “folder view” that is available as a display mode for your library?

  • for movie type libraries, select Movies or Folders mode
  • for tv-show type libraries, select TV Shows, Seasons, Episodes or Folders mode
  • for music type libraries, select Artists, Albums, Tracks or Folders mode

I keep being surprised people are still using Folders to access their media within Plex.
I have since learned there’s some actual use cases – mostly in the area of organizing home videos… but those use cases are quite limited.

Thank you for your quick reply.
On my home screen for plex I have a bunch of items showing on the left hand side. On the right hand side it shows a film I was recently watching and a film I can’t seem to remove (I assume this is a bug). Under that it shows a single line of films in the order they were most recently added.

The options I have under the home “button” are:

  • Playlists - this button actually appears twice but contains nothing when I click on either
  • films - this is where my film library is stored with each film placed into an appropriate folder. At the moment I can only see these films alphabetically - TV episodes show as 01 … so I’m left navigating page after page just to see a film like “All about Eve”. If I want to see “Zulu” then it would be impossible. 3 options appear at the top of the screen:
  1. Recommended - this says I it can’t connect to the wifi
  2. Library - this lists my films alphabetically
  3. Collections - this shows nothing
  • Movies & TV - this shows a bunch of films that are not mine and that I have no interest in watching.

It’s worrying that you “keep being surprised” that people use folders. This seems like basic functionality to me. At the moment Plex is showing me a whole load of things I don’t want and has taken away the only functionality that I find useful.

Ideally all I want is just a movie wall that shows the posters of films in date order, an option to view by folder and a search function. Everything else is just bumf.

You might to make yourself familiar with how Plex works.
If you properly named your files so Plex can match them, it’ll load all sorts of metadata that can be used for filtering and sorting your library (not just the name but descriptions, cast/team, ratings…). Your statement above makes me believe you’re just seeing those files as they’re named without any additional information attached to them.

If you feel that’s all way too much work… click on the “Library” tab (top navigation between “Recommended” and “Collections”). There you can specify the type of object based on which you want Plex to display your library (see my previous post) – including an option to display the library by folders.

As for the Movies & TV… that’s Plex own ad-supported video on demand section. If you don’t like it, you can disable it like all other online media sources (e.g. news, podcasts, web shows) and it won’t bother you again.

The files are named fine. I always get the correct movie poster appearing. I also get all the correct info from imdb however I only get actor info when I use Plex on my PC and not if I use my firestick connected to the tv.

I also don’t get the same options appearing as in the help page you gave me. On the films page I just have the 3 links at the top of the page as I mentioned before ( Recommended, library and collections) but then it immediately shows the movie posters with no option for All, TV shows and by title. I also don’t get the facility to click a letter to get movies starting with that name. Is there something I can click to get this?

This is the help page that shows the options I’m missing. Sorry can’t work out how to include a picture.

Mike

I had missed that you’re on a pretty old version of Plex – both on your server and client.
Plex for Android/FireTV 8.2.0 is addressing an issue where the filters don’t show when you’re on an old PMS version.

If possible you should however upgrade your server.
The latest public release is version 1.19.4. The version you have installed is from November 2017.

PS: Even that Plex client is dating back to November 2017 (current version is 8.2.0)

If you have TV Shows - make a TV Show Library and put your TV Shows into it:

Naming and Structuring TV Shows requires you read and follow the instructions - or it just won’t work:

You can’t put Movies and TV Shows into the same library type. Movies go in a Movie Library - TV Shows go in a TV Show Library. Once you have the TV Show Library, you can pin it to the side bar.

The Missing Features at the top in your library is a FireTV thing. This is a rather common occurrence for FireTV Users. The cure is to buy something else. Anything else, basically.

You can try uninstalling the app then re-installing it. The Features may snap in - they may not. I have them on mine - lucky, I guess. AFAIK, there is nothing else you can do - it either works, or it doesn’t.

I tried to download an upgrade for the server - it gave me how options to download (3 related to ARM processors and 1 Intel). I grabbed the Intel one as there’s a Celeron CPU in my QNAP TS 291 NAS. Went to the App Centre and tried to upload that file and I got an error message Failed to install PlexMediaServer. Upgrade QTS to 4.3.0 or a newer compatible version. Any ideas?

Everything was working before. I had all my movies showing and could see them in folder view. There was an upgrade a month or two back and now I can’t.

If you’re on PMS 1.9.6 and Plex for Android 7.25, there’s been no recent update on the Plex side.

Is that a QNAP TS 219? I cannot find any references to a QNAP TS 291.
The 219 seems to support their OS up to version 4.3.3 but no longer the 4.4 branch.
I’ve also found this article that this QNAP platform is no longer supported on Plex (PMS 1.14x should be the last version running on that NAS):

That being said… can you try to update your Fire TV Stick to Plex 8.2? Or is that also a dead end?
