Folders not showing up on HDD

Since I installed Catalina, my Mac is not showing any folders in my HDD. I adjusted all the permissions and they look fine. The media server works from my main hard drive, but can’t access the HDD folders. Any help would be appreciated…

So you mean external drives like a USB drive when you say HDD?

Yes…

when you are adding folders to a library can it see the HD at all? if you type in a folder name manually does it work?

You’re going to have to figure out how the new Security & Privacy features work. Catalina makes you specifically authorize apps to work with storage. Here’s a reference from an article on what’s new:

More macOS Features

Apps on the Mac will need permission - asked once, when first needed - to access files in your Documents or Desktop folder, in iCloud Drive, and on any external volume connected to your Mac. You’ll also be prompted when any app can capture your keystrokes or take a screenshot or video of your screen.

macOS will run in its own private, read-only volume, so there will be no way for malicious apps to write files to the volume or alter existing files, or no way for you to accidentally delete key files. The installation of macOS Catalina creates two volumes, one with the operating system, and another with data, segregating the two types of files.

Apple is doubling down on security and privacy, and this is an impressive list of new features. We’ll keep you posted as more information about these key features becomes available.

Channels DVR is currently having an issue with this.

It recognizes the drive, but not the folders inside.

Thanks for the heads up, I’ll look into it…

CWallace, you are a life saver! I checked the privacy settings for Plex and everything was locked out. After I opened it back up for use, everything is like it was before. Thank you so much, I hope this helps others with the same issue!

Great that worked out for you. I’m waiting on updating my servers. But glad to see trailblazers out there!

Thanks, CWallace. Finally I can stream from my NAS.

Hi, I am having the same issue. Can you let me know specifically how you unlocked the privacy settings? Thanks.

Not a step by step but this will help you in the right direction…

Re. folder content unavailable when accessing USB-connected APFS drive/folder on Mac Catalina, having tried all solutions proposed, (e.g. changes in privacy settings, shared settings, share-only user names, SMB enabled, you name it…) all to no avail, only thing that worked was selecting library type 'Other Videos" and not ‘TV Shows’ or ‘Movies’, (despite what may be TV or Movie content) and only then did all .avi and .mp4 files, etc. scan correctly and show up as thumbnails, and then visible/playable via Plex or Infuse client. What a pain – wish this workaround were better documented and more widely known…
