Suggested macOS Catalina improvement

Server Version#: 1.18.9.2578-513b381af

Apologies if this has been covered already, but I couldn’t find any messages covering it. New security measures in macOS Catalina prevent applications from accessing files/folders/drives without explicit permission. I helped someone remotely with a Plex problem and realised this was at the root of their problem.

Unfortunately they’d just replaced their existing external hard drive at the same time as updating to Catalina, so the cause was not immediately clear. They had previously stored their media on an external hard drive and shared with Plex, but on upgrading all their media disappeared.

I checked the Library paths and all seemed well. I reset everything and attempted to add the library paths again and found that Plex couldn’t see any of the folders on the external hard drive. I entered the paths manually, but scanning didn’t apparently ‘see’ anything. I finally realised that this could be solved by updating the System prefs to allow Plex full disk access.

Most apps automatically ask for the required privileges, but Plex doesn’t appear to. I believe this could trip up a lot of people. Is this supposed to be working? If not, can it be added?

I believe it has nothing to do with Full disk access in this case but Removable Disk access. But i get your point.

Exactly - the fundamental problem is that permission is required and Plex is not asking for it – it just silently fails to work. That seems like a problem that should be fixed
