Force ac3 5.1 downmix

I won’t be able to test this until tomorrow at the earliest but maybe someone else can before then.

F00b4r, did you have a chance to test that file?

Sorry forgot about this but will try it tomorrow.

Not sure if someone may have figured this out, but I still can't play mp4/m4v files with an AC3 track downmixed to 2 channel audio.

Same here with PlexConnect and ATV3.

AC3 audio from mp4/m4v files is not being downmixed to 2ch aac audio and thus no sound to listen to. The PMS "nowplaying" feature also says that no transcoding is active :( ... I also tried all different settings mentioned above. On my iPhone's Plex App it works perfectly with only the audio stream being transcoded to AAC. Seems like the PMS feature for downmixing Dolby Digital for Apple TV doesn't work with mp4/m4v files at all... Would be nice if this could be fixed by someone out there...

Cheers

Try to force transcoding... does it change things?

That a bit of a jump to a conclusion considering it seems to work for virtually everyone else.

What do you have the audio settings set to in the Apple settings on the ATV? What is your hardware setup end to end?

Force Transcoding is working with sound coming out of the speakers (of course). But that is not what I wanted to end up with because the video is then being transcoded as well for no reason.

On the ATV I tried Dolby Digital auto/off/on and Audio Output auto/16-Bit.

My hardware setup is a QNAP TS670 i7 (for media, PMS and PlexConnect) and a ATV3 connected via HDMI to a Samsung 32" TV.

Cheers

Perhaps this "bug" has something to do with the fact that mp4/m4v files have two audiostreams, one containing 2ch aac and one containing 5ch ac3. The PMS setting for downmixing Dolby Digital for Apple TV perhaps only sets the containing 2ch aac stream OR the 6ch ac3 stream according to the selected setting when it is a mp4/m4v file.

But the thing is that my mp4/m4v files only have one 5ch ac3 audiostream and thus PMS can't find the correct (2ch aac) audio stream which normally would be selected... What PMS should do is take the 5ch ac3 audio stream and transcode it to 2ch aac like it does when using Plex iOS client.

Perhaps that helps somehow leading to the right direction ... :)

Does this mean those problem files are all ones that you ripped yourself?

Do you have a sample of one?

What is the model number of the TV you have?

I only use m4v-files that I ripped myself using RoadMovie app (OSX) and FFMPEG with the command

-y -i {INFILE} -strict experimental -preset slow -acodec ac3 -ab 320k -ar 44.1k -ac 6 -s 1920x1080 -vcodec libx264 -profile:v high -level:v 4.0 -b:v 2400k -threads 0 -movflags +faststart {OUTFILE}.m4v

I created a 10 seconds sample file that can be downloaded here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3359188/140330_1080p_mp4_with_ac3_6ch_audio.m4v

The TV I tested it with is an oldschool Samsung LE26R51BA.

Doesn't work for me :(

Try this file as a secondary source to eliminate your encode as a problem (BTW, it doesn't work for me without transcoding): https://dl.dropbox.com/u/81986513/112012/1122fixed-ac3-aac-mkvmp4-testfiles/m4v-with-ac3-startsWithKeyframe.m4v

Like you, if I force a transcode explicitly, or set the bitrate lower than the selected video is encoded, thereby forcing a transcode, I get sound. This has been my workaround, but it's not optimal.

Doesn't work for me either without explicitly forcing to transcode... :(

I was hoping someone who has a functioning system could try playing the two linked files above and tell me if they work for them.
