Force Plex Apps / Devices to connect via "Custom certificate domain" / "Custom server access URLs" instead of the Public IP of the Server

Server Version#: 1.24.5.5173 (Synology NAS)
Player Version#: newest version (Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K)

Short question:

Is there a way to force Plex Apps / Devices to use the the Custom certificate domain / Custom server access URLs to connect to the server instead of the public ip of the server?

Long story:

See also my old thread:
https://forums.plex.tv/t/remote-access-problems-with-fire-tv-stick-4k-connection-failed-server-doesnt-have-required-conditions/751770

The Problem:

My public ip changes every night. Because of the ip change, the remote connection of a Fire TV Stick 4K will only work for 1 day. The next day the Plex App on the Fire TV Stick can’t connect to the old public ip anymore, because the ip of the server has changed. The only way to make it run, was to restart the Plex App every day…

[Fire TV Stick → Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → Plex → Force stop]

That was very annoying.

After some searching, i set following settings in the Plex Media Server:

  • Custom certificate location
  • Custom certificate encryption key
  • Custom certificate domain
  • Custom server access URLs

After that, everything worked fine. The Fire TV Stick was using the Custom certificate domain / Custom server access URLs. No restarts were needed. At least for a few days. Then i generated a new certificate file (+ restarted the Plex Media Server) and now i have the old problem again. The Fire TV Stick is using the public ip instead of the Custom certificate domain / Custom server access URLs. So every day the Plex app has to be restartet…

How can i force the Fire TV Stick 4K to use the Custom certificate domain / Custom server access URLs instead of the public ip?

Oh, so easy? I thought when i disable remote access i would disable everything. Even the acces via Custom certificate domain / Custom server access URLs.

I disabled remote access now and can still start a remote playback on my iphone. That’s a great. I will test the Fire TV Stick tomorrow. If it works, i will mark your post as the solution and link it in my old thread as well.

Thank you very much

Thank you very much. It’s working.

I just had to change one more thing. I had to add the port to the “Custom server access URLs”. At least for the Fire TV Stick. The iPhone was using the port, that was set in the Remote Access settings but the Fire TV Stick was using port 443 after Remote Access was deactivated. After adding the port to the address, it’s finally working.
