Force Refresh does not update rotated photo thumbnails

New to Plex.

I added a photo library that had some photos that needed rotating. After I rotate and do a Force Refresh or Update the thumbnails do not update. Log shows refresh completed and this only runs for a few seconds.

Thanks

could you see if Analyze does it?

I see it processing, but still the same, did another Force Refresh after just to see, same thing.

Thanks

could you get all the debug Plex Media Server.log and Plex Media Scanner.log and Plex Media Scanner Analysis.log and any continuation log files (.log.1 .log.2 etc if used for the refresh and analyze) and we can get it raised as an issue with the devs

Perhaps you can repeat the action in a test library first setting Debug and Verbose Logging on Plex Media Server (Settings / General / Show Advanced). Save and after that restart plex media server to get fresh logs

Wait 5 minutes for it to establish itself

Create a new test library with few photos

Change one of the pictures and refresh and analyze

Save all the logs and note down which files were rotated and when and attach the log files and details and which ones remained wrong orientation

Attach logs using 'more reply options' and attach file

I'll try what you suggest tomorrow. Since last update I've been experimenting, here's what I've done.

First off, I started by adding a few mixed photos to a folder for my first test library.

Plex is honoring the EXIF Orientation flag for photos taken with a real camera. I have some JPEGs that don't have this flag, so they are being read top to bottom - good.

If I rotate a file and save it, I notice Plex is immediately reprocessing that photo - good, but still no update.

I edited a JPEG to alter the file size, I see it process, but still no update.

All in all I'm not too worried at this point because the few I have I can rotate before adding.

I have an off topic question since I have your attention, you seem to have been around this product for some time. If you have an answer, I'll make another post with the appropriate tags. Is there a way to make Plex have photos fit to screen or show larger? There is quite a bit of black space around them.

Much thanks for the help, I'll still try what you suggest to see what we see. It may be that Plex is doing exactly as intended, not sure. Would be nice if it would update thumbs. It would even be better if you could rotate in the client.

Cheers

The scanning using last modified date so if you change a photo and the last modified date/time changes then Plex Media Server ought to detect it and do a rescan

There is a big issue with EXIF Rotation flags and old OS's which ignored the flags and I have a number of outstanding topics on the forums from 2 years ago. The issue is that on old windows systems - with microsoft office picture manager users may have manually rotated images and Plex Media Server cannot tell if that was done and acts on the EXIF Rotation indicators and so may end up with images being rotated twice and get displayed with wrong orientation

The issue is explained here

With regards to fitting to screen the action may vary from one Plex client to another. The subject may have been discussed. So try doing some forum searches - try also with google search prefixing search with site:forums.plex.tv

FWIW we seemed to have run into this issue. We rotated a few images but the old thumbnails persist. We’ve tried Analyze, Refresh All Metadata, and Scan Library Files. None seem to correct the thumbnails.

I do not see Force Refresh anywhere… perhaps this is an older feature? Any suggestions/guidance would be greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays.

What version of PMS do you have installed and on what platform?

Are you using a web browser to view the images or a another Plex client?

Version 1.18.4.2171 on Windows 10 here @darcilicious … both web and Roku clients show the incorrect thumbnails. When loading the actual photos they view fine. It’s the thumbnails that are grumpy.

A few days later and the thumbnails are still incorrect. Is there a way to do a purge/clear/refresh on thumbnails? Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

I can confirm that with Version 1.18.5.2309 the thumbnails are still incorrectly displaying but the images are not when viewing in full. Is there not a way to rebuild the thumbnail database?

Same with Version 1.18.7.2415. Are you able to help here @darcilicious? Seems like this issue has been going on for nearly five years here. Looking for a way to simply reset the stored thumbnails. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

*bump* for awareness.

Can you create a new Photos library (don’t delete the current one!) and see if it has the same thumbnails issue for those photos?

Hey good thinking @darcilicious! I did try creating a new library with the folder that is having problems and it populated as expected. Hoping that this reset/refreshed the cache I tried going back to the older one with problems and they are still incorrect. :frowning:

I am open to any further suggestions outside of deleting and recreating the current one. We have put some work into it already and it would be a bummer to do so.

Seems like there should be a “rebuild thumbnails” function somewhere!

Is there any chance you can remove those photos individually and re-add them? To the original library I mean?

GENIUS! Thank you @darcilicious! That worked like a charm.

So to be sure, what worked for me is:

  1. Cut photos out from directory, move them to root.
  2. Library → Scan Library Files
  3. Cut photos from root back into original directory.
  4. Library → Scan Library Files

You can mark this as the answer as far as I am concerned. I can also remove this page from my “nag” browser/url list. Thanks again @darcilicious!
