Forced Subtitles no longer working

Server Version#: Version 1.14.0.5470
Player Version#: Version 1.14.0.5470 (web)

Not sure why but all of a sudden forced subtitles stopped working. I’m using the web player. I’ve confirmed they work when launching the video with vlc. I do nothing and they show up. What am I missing in plex?

looks like if i select the first subtitle option below the audio, its the forced subtitles. Why wouldn’t plex just use it if its marked as forced?

Is the subtitle really marked as ‘forced’ or did just someone just write ‘forced’ into the stream title (which is not the proper way).

Sorry, this is not the Plex media info.

But I can see that this is a mp4 container, from which Plex cannot read the ‘forced’ flag.
For this to work, you either must have a MKV container or have the forced subtitle as an external SRT file, name like
filename_of_the_mp4_file.eng.forced.srt

it’s from media info… it was one of the options on the page you sent me. Here is the Plex xml file.72518.xml.zip (5.4 KB)

Sorry for not being clearer!
Yes, the XML confirmed my initial conclusion above.

ok exported it with subler and its showing up now as forced but it doesn’t default to it. 72536.xml.zip (5.4 KB)

That is quite normal, because you have already flipped the subtitle selector of this episode manually. The automatic selection only works only before you make a selection manually. Otherwise the automatic would ‘override’ your manual decisions, and that would be even more annoying.

Try it with an episode which you haven’t ‘touched’ yet.

It’s a movie. Is there a way to tell plex to forget all your selections? I did do an optimize, clean, and empty trash after moving it out of the folder but it still doesn’t auto select it.

Only by making it appear to Plex as completely new. (by performing the Plex Dance )

Which then also affects the ‘Added at’ date of this item and makes it appear as ‘Recently Added’ in the user interface.
Manually pre-selecting the right subtitle stream using the web app might be easier.

Keep in mind that the subtitle selection (manually or automatically) is stored per-user-account.
If you are concerned about your shared user getting the right subtitles selected by default: as long as they haven’t touched the subtitle selectors, they will get the forced subtitles automatically selected.

I did the plex dance and when it finds it, here is what i have.

Did I do something wrong?

What are your settings here?

Once I rechecked that top box its working. I had uncheck it when I was testing.

Just out of curiosity, how does this work for remote users? You said if they already selected something, it remembers it. When I do the plex dance, does it clear it for them also?

Whether the user is remote or local doesn’t matter.

As long as they have the settings in their plex account (or you have made them, if they are ‘managed’ users) they will get the subtitle selected automatically.

Yes.
