this is so insane dude. just constant breaking and fixing for the sake of job security. Why cant these people just leave us alone?
Because then theyâd be out of jobs ![]()
Hereâs the real kicker though. Plex could 100% still be an open-source passion project for a handful of devs. It really doesnât need to be a full fledged company. We donât need constant feature creep/reset/creep. All we need is Plex, as it was maybe 5 years ago before all the streaming crap showed up. Just a few devs keeping it alive and updated for modern hardware and adding in some much requested features/fixes here and there.
Like most projects they let it get too big. They sold out to make a buck and now weâre all suffering for it. Emby, Jellyfin, and Kodi all have promise but need a few more upgrades or a bit more elbow grease to be a full Plex replacement. My guess is that with how much Plex effed up this release, those other projects may pick up some dev speed in order to compete a little stronger.
After this debacle (and finally managing to get an old version installed on Android) I was thinking âMaybe I just stop updating my server, too. Lock it in on what works.â
Of course, I was a fool, and trusted Plex and installed the latest on Synology. And, what happens? One of my libraries doesnât like to load (Win/Chrome, Android, Firestick). I can go to the library, and âLibrariesâ at the top, but âRecommendedâ which I need for âContinue Watchingâ since the âContinue Watchingâ under Home stopped working right about a year ago (because: Plex). So, reading the release notes didnât indicate anything that would cause this level of breakage, yet here I am. Because: Plex.
Even the âUNOâ interface D_eight6 references above never quite worked right. The Continue Watching with the double-wide posters (waste of screen space == more clicking == less efficient use of screen real estate, Because: Plex) only shows if I use Chrome and go to my Synology by IP. If I go through the general Plex desktop interface, Continue Watching are regularly sized tiles, same with Android and Firestick. So, they never even managed to hit consistency with this. Iâll say âfortunatelyâ because thereâs no need to show me a double-width tile for something I obviously watched recently. Not sure how anyone thought this was a good idea or an advancement in UI design (and if they actually did, why not go double-width on all tiles?).
As a company, they donât sell enough subscriptions, so they need to get in to all the other point sales in the UI, and then the dreaded âletâs retain users with social engagement!!!â stupidity, letting us see and share what we watch with our friends. Who is their market for this? 14 year olds? It really should be open sourced and just left alone. It works, itâs fine. We donât want nor need all these stupid things to try to get us to engage and buy content. When I buy content I buy a BD or DVD, like an adult. I donât buy media thatâs effectively leased via ToS and can be pulled back from me at any time.
Iâm going to add my voice to this, even though I rarely do. These changes have interfered so much into my regular day-to-day use of the app that I feel I have to reach out.
I bought into and use Plex because it allows me to control my content. Videos, photos, music, I have spent hours curating content and building a system thatâs right for my family. I have cut cords and reduced my subscriptions from other content providers because they kept intruding on my home.
This move by Plex is no different. They have crossed lines and moved boundaries so that I am forced to leave them behind and find another solution. My family who have been using my photo library for years, will now have to learn a new solution because the morons at Plex who decided to burn this app down have nothing in mind but themselves.
Yep, thereâs been a few things but after many years I am finally going to bite the bullet and ditch as my main . Been a long nice run, but this is crap.
they must have hired the dev team that got sacked from SonosâŠ
