All of a sudden I see all of the forums on the list, and the option to display only my chosen forums is gone.
Thanks for bringing this up. We’re enquiring clarification from Vanilla.
Do you see the new Mute/Unmute function in the ‘cog’ menu?

Yes. Not sure what it does, though.

I assume it does something similar.
All my ‘hidden’ subforums are now ‘muted’ subforums.
content from ‘muted’ subforums doesn’t appear if you use e.g. Discussions to get an overview of new activity in the forum.
This is what I mainly use. I rarely go to the forum main page, which AFAIR was the only place where the ‘followed categories’ filter was actually used.
The answer from Vanilla kinda confirms my assumptions:
Due to user response, customer feedback and general confusion, we’ve removed all categories/followed categories in favour of “muting” categories. You can “mute” a category, which will make its discussions not appear in Recent Discussions. All previously “unfollowed” categories are now muted. The toggle initially did two things: it hid categories from the category list and it hid the category’s discussions from recent discussions. Due to our category refactoring and such, it no longer did the former, so that toggle became useless. As such, users will now see all categories that exist, but their Recent Discussions page won’t have any discussions from previously hidden (or, going forward, muted) categories.
We also plan to do more work on this area in the future, related to category subscribing or unfollowing. This is just an intermediary change to relieve some of the confusion around this older feature.

Ugh. I do use the main Forum page, and can’t imagine what was confusing about it. I’ll have to get on Vanilla’s forums and complain.
Any idea what version of Vanilla I’m complaining about?

Not sure. It is the Vanilla-Cloud version.
Talk about a downgrade. It was really nice just having the sections that were relevant to me. Now the main page is a pain having to sift through the sections to get to the correct one.

I agree. It seems the best way to send a complaint to Vanilla is to email them at support@vanillaforums.com. Let’s get a campaign going.
I’ve sent an email to Vanilla at support@vanillaforums.com expressing my dissatisfaction with this change.
I hope Plex will also urge Vanilla to restore this function. The more voices the better.
