One of my home users deleted their account and then created a new one with a different email address. I added the new home user account to my server, but their email address shows instead of their name. I tried to add the username from the old account, but it said it was taken. Is there a time frame from when an account is deleted and when their username is “freed”?
Just for context, our usernames are our real names. It makes it look “neater” when you open Plex and see a list of people, rather than a bunch of email addresses.
I tried again but this time it said that it was invalid.
The username was Firstname Surname, so I’m assuming that the invalid character was the space. But this was the exact username chosen when setting up the original account, so it doesn’t make sense that it’s no longer considered valid. Is this a bug?
I tried changing their username back to the username of their original account. So instead of their username being “firstname.surname@gmail.com”, it would be “Firstname Surname”, just like it was in their original account. It’s been over a month so that username should available now, but it’s saying that it’s invalid. :S
Basically I just want our real names to appear on the user list for my server, rather than firstname99 or firstname.surname@gmail.com
But my account and my users original account username is Firstname Surname. Does it only let you use a space when first creating the account, and doesn’t allow you to use a space if you want to change an existing username? Seems a bit bizarre :S
This is a new restriction which was introduced in around 2019, I think.
Existing accounts with a space character in the user name continue to work, but as soon as you create a new account or even try to change the user name of an existing account, the new rule is enforced.
Ah that explains it. It’s a shame, for now I have just replaced the space with an underscore but it would be great if Plex let us use display names. I voted on a feature request for that not too long ago, fingers crossed.
