FreeNAS - Plex Media Server CODEC issue

Server Version#: 1.40.2.8395
Player Version#: 4.125.1

I have a newly installed plex media server using Danb’s scripted installer.

When I try run certain clips, I get the following error.

plex codec error
plex codec error729×466 31 KB

It may just be a permissions issue, but then I need assistance with setting it up correctly.
otherwise, does anyone have any suggestions?
Maybe I can manually add the codec?

Just checked… all the files failing to play appear to be .MKV files.
I read somewhere that Plex doesn’t play .MKV
if this is the case…
WHY???

Its been years now that Plex has been running… why is this still a thing?
