Frozen Update + Migration Fail = Disastrous Re-install

Server Version#: 1.21.0.3744
Player Version#:

Synology Ds1019+

Hello everyone,
I’ll try to make this brief. But it’s a lot.

The last few updates would not install on my NAS. Id get to the “installing” window and just got a rotating icon that never went away (hours). No big deal at the time since Plex was still playing fine for me and my shared users.

Until yesterday when plex could not be found on any players. I logged into DSM and noticed that the plex server icon was not even there.

I searched in Package Center and found it fine, but it wasn’t running.

Well I figured now might as well be a good time to update the server. So I went to uninstall then reinstall plex on the NAS, and everything started to go bonkers.

When I went to uninstall, I was asked if I wanted to keep all library info for a future install. I clicked yes, and uninstalled.

When I went to reinstall, I got this error message;

ERROR: Unable to migrate existing “/volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server” to DSM 7. System error 0. Please consult our forums.

I did what the forum said and granted read write access to PlexMediaServer, and tried installing again.

This time when I went to reinstall, the Icon in Package Center said REPAIR, instead of install. So I clicked that.

Everyhthing installed, but my media is ALL OVER THE PLACE NOW. At first I just noticed that it hadn’t read all my media, so I did a library refresh. After that, it started adding all the 400 or so missing titles, however, the Timeline of date added is complete off, Posters are reset to default, previously “separated” duplicate movies are combined again, and for some reason it wont fully read all the TV media in one of my shared folders. (more on this at the end)

It’s as if when it was “repaired”, it did a reinstall from my library a year ago. And yes, I have my library set to update/backup automatically, and have seen it doing the backup multiple times.

Before I have to go through my 3000+ movies one by one and curating them to my liking again, is there any way to find my old library saved files so that it will load that info?

Also. I have two Shared media folders. Movies, and TV. For some reason, plex won’t read all of the media I have in the TV folder. Movie Folder seems to read fine, albeit it’s complete out of wack. Ive tried moving all the data out of that shared folder and back in again, but it wont show up.

Any idears here?

Thanks

You have been bitten by Synology. I’m very sorry for that.

PMS 1.21.0.3744 – IS BETA FOR DSM 7 BETA ONLY . Not for production use. We can’t get them to update it.

You hit “REPAIR” – No no. That only works for Synology apps.

This level of repair , when you’re probably not sure how it all goes together, is fairly daunting.

For that reason, I’m willing to reach out to you in private and help you remotely 1:1

Does that sound like a plan?

Sounds great!

We’ve actually spoke before, a loooooong time ago about a buffering and subtitles and playback issues.

You’re a good man Chuck! I’d love the help again!

To all who find this:

  1. The monkey flipped the wrong switch
  2. The gorilla couldn’t type with his big fat thumbs.
  3. Situation resolved by installing 1.29.2 from Public
