Server lost after updating to 7.1-42661

Server Version#: 1.27.2.5929-a806c5905-x86_64_DSM7
Player Version#: 4.86.1

I updated my NAS server to run 7.1-42661. After doing so and reinstalling PLEX from the current Synology package, PLEX cannot locate the server name and settings I used before, and instead insists on starting a new one. I am a novice at tech, so please ELI5 here.

Were you running DSM 6 and upgraded to DSM 7 or did you update an existing PMS DSM 7 installation ?

I was running DSM 6.

I followed your instructions from this thread:

I did not delete the Plex Media Server folder as was instructed in an earlier thread. I have this backed up now. Should I try doing so?

At this point,

  1. The “Plex” shared folder has all your server data ?
  2. There exists a “PlexMediaServer” shared folder which is essentially EMPTY

?

Yes, that’s correct. You’re referring to the PlexMediaServer folder without any spaces between the words, right?

You’re correct.

DSM 7 made us change everything.

Given everything changed to PlexMediaServer, it made sense for the shared folder to also be named PlexMediaServer.

It also solved many problems were folks had put their media in the “Plex” share.

Now, we don’t care what happens to the “Plex” shared folder.

After your upgrade to DSM 7, when you tried to install the DSM7 SPK
(it has DSM7 in the file name), did it not give you a popup message with instructions?

Yes, it did, and I followed those instructions as well. The way I have Plex set up on my NAS, I have all of my media files saved under the main Plex folder. That’s where I point the scanners to retrieve content. Are you saying I should relocate all that media to this new PlexMediaServer folder? I hope not, as it’ many many TB of content.

you can do whatever you want with the “Plex” shared folder.

Before I give instructions, Please confirm for me, one more time,

You have Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server,
–AND–
In that Plex Media Server folder is all your server metadata and files ?

Here are screenshots showing my folders. LUCETTA is the Synology NAS’s name, and it’s assigned Z when I map the drive for my PC.

So the media itself–all the movie, music, photo files, etc.–are in that upper-level PLEX folder.

And I just noticed I misspelled “Audio.” D’oh.

Excellent, this confirms what I thought happened.

  1. You upgraded DSM 7.
  2. During that upgrade, DSM Package Center gave you PMS 1.21.0.3744 (the BETA) package
  3. 1.21.0 isn’t compatible.
  4. Installing 1.27.2 manually, did an invisible “Upgrade” (which it’s supposed to) and moved the BETA data to PlexMediaServer.
  5. Since you didn’t have time to Manual Install, DSM itself broke you ownership.

To fix this.

  1. I have a How-To,
  • It tells you about all the changes to Plex for DSM 7
  • It then tells you the Step-by-Step (Don’t skip or miss any) process to migrate all your DSM 6 server data to DSM 7.
  1. Depending on how many files you have indexed, this can take anywhere from minutes, to hours, to days. Estimated speed is 3 minutes for each 1000 files you have indexed in PMS.

  2. You cannot interrupt the install. DO NOT refresh the “Installing” page -OR- Restart the NAS.
    – DSM may issue a false warning (if you miss a step) – which you can ignore

  3. The installer is intelligent now, It will give you step-by-step instructions of everything you need to do.

My How-To is the supplement to it WITH SCREENSHOTS :sunglasses:

TO GET YOU STARTED

  1. Uninstall the DSM 7 package - use the ERASE option.
    – This removes the unusable/empty DSM 7 server in “PlexMediaServer”

  2. Install the DSM7 package again.
    – It will start running its checks
    – If it doesn’t like anything, it will stop with the instructions printed in the popup page. Follow those instructions. They are custom to your machine.

Please read the above link

Here is the HOW-TO perform the migration, step by step.

If questions, ASK. It’s easier to get it right than it is to clean up afterwards

Ah, I see. Unfortunately, I did install that Beta version first, not knowing it was wonky. When I uninstalled it and did the manual install, I thought that would erase the first attempt. I’ll try your instructions and report back. Thanks!

As long as you have ALL your metadata in the “Plex” share, we can SAFELY get rid of that beta

OK, I followed these steps. I think it’s a positive sign that the “installing” window is still up–every time I’ve tried before it just installed right away. Pardon one more newbie question, but how do I get to the log you show in your screenshot? The Log Center package isn’t showing me any detail.

open a NEW TAB or Window to DSM

(Keep the installing one OPEN)

In that new tab, Open Resource Monitor.

You should see both more CPU and Disk activity.

Also, Using FileStation, In the “Plex” shared folder, you will find a file “Migration.log”

This is the progress log

Reporting back: I let the installation run overnight, and this morning a “Failed to install” screen appeared, so I’m trying again.

NO NO NO!

You can’t blindy retry. Must inspect and verify it’s legitimate failure or DSM being stupid.

Did you forget ?

It might say that…

Show me your Migration.log

It was my error. I didn’t realize that uninstalling my previous attempt had erased the permissions I’d given to the PlexMediaServer, so I just reinstituted those.

I’m sorry but I cannot locate the Migration.log. Here is a screenshot of what appears in the FileStation Plex folder.

It took about three hours for the permissions process, and I just started up the installation again.
