No Library after upgrading Synology 218+ NAS

Server Version#: 1.41.5.9626-7009626
Player Version#: 1.112.0.359-0d79a49f

I updated my Synology 218+ server to DSM 7.0.1 and now all of a sudden I can’t access my library. When I open the Media Server package from the Synology home page I just get a “page isn’t working” message. I also noticed the package files got installed on my Shared root folder (which wasn’t there before). I also cannot access my library from my installed app through my mac (which I was able to do before) nor does it seem there was any library configured before as none of those settings are accessible. I tried downloading the server app for my desktop and yet again, no library.

It’s been a while since I had to configure all of this and not sure where to begin. Any help on this would be appreciated.

When you upgrade from DSM 6 → DSM 7, there is a whole lot of steps you need to take (none of which are complicated). ( Synology changed EVERYTHING )

We have it well documented – with screenshots

As long as you follow every step, not missing any, EVERYTHING you had on DSM 6 will be transferred to DSM 7

I would like you to read here – thorughly – and ask any questions before beginning.

Got it. Read through it. I’m not getting any error messages on the installation. I did change all the permissions as indicated and I still get a blank page when I try to open the server from Synology’s package center. Should I uninstall and reinstall anyway?

The uninstall / re-install is what performs the migration, moving information from /Plex to /PlexMediaServer.

Be sure to give system internal user PlexMediaServer full control of the /Plex shared folder before the uninstall / re-install.

I’ve tried all of this twice and it’s still not working. I keep going back to the permissions after I do the install and the selections are all gone from the plexmediaserver user and plex user. So something is happening where each install is resetting the permissions. And I am checking each time after I save them initially to go back in and make sure they are saved before doing the install. Do I need to do a complete uninstall and choose the “Erase all plex media server from this system” option?

You updated from DSM 6.x to DSM 7.0.1, correct?

The Plex shared folder, is still present correct?

Furthermore, com.plexapp.plugins.library.db is present in /Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases, correct?

If yes to all, then the Plex server from when the NAS ran DSM6 is still present.

Do this:

  1. Do not touch permissions for the PlexMediaServer shared folder.

  2. Give system internal user PlexMediaServer full control of the Plex shared folder (admin + read + write).

  3. Synology Control Panel → Security → Security tab → Logout Timer = 600 min. (will change back later).

  4. Using Synology Package Center, uninstall Plex Media Server. When prompted, choose the “Erase all…” option.

  5. Using Synology File Station, verify the PlexMediaServer shared folder is empty. If there are any files/folders present, delete them.

  6. Now re-install Plex Media Server. The installation routine will find the pre-existing server in /Plex and migrate it to /PlexMediaServer. The process may take some time. Do not interrupt it. Stay logged in to the NAS if possible (nothing bad happens if you logout, you just don’t see progress).

  7. When finished, if successful, /Plex will be empty except for a migration.log file. You can revert the logout timer setting if desired.

  8. From a system on the same network as the NAS, point a browser at http://syno_ip_addr:32400/web. For example, if the NAS’ address is 10.1.2.3, use http://10.1.2.3:32400/web. You should be able to login, click the wrench icon (settings) and reach server settings.

The Plex folder is no longer there. I noticed it gone when I uninstalled and reinstalled the first time. Only the PlexMediaServer folder remained.

If the Plex folder is gone, and you do not have a backup, then the server from when the NAS ran DSM 6 is gone.

If you’ve never had Plex Media Server running successfully since updating to DSM 7, then you can completely remove PMS and start over (since there is nothing to save).

  1. Uninstall Plex Media Server. When prompted, choose the “Erase all” option. This will delete everything from the PlexMediaServer folder. It will not touch your media files.

  2. If you wish to update DSM to a later version, then do so now.
The DS218+ can run DSM 7.3.2.
    https://www.synology.com/en-us/support/download/DS218+?version=7.3#system
The DSM version does not matter for Plex. Check with any other applications you run on the NAS to see if they’re affected by a DSM update.

  3. Download the current version of Plex Media Server, v.1.43.0.10492, from plex.tv/download.
A DS218+ has an Intel Celeron J3355 CPU. Download the Intel/AMD 64-bit version of Plex Media Server. Note that there are separate downloads depending on the version of DSM (DSM 7 and DSM 7.2.2+).

  4. Manually install Plex Media Server
Synology Package Center → Manual Install

  5. After installation completes, point a web browser at http://syno_ip_address:32400/web. For example, if the NAS’ IP address is 10.1.2.3, use http://10.1.2.3:32400/web.
You should be able to login, claim the server, create libraries, etc.

If I’ve completely misread things and you did have a working Plex server after updating to DSM 7, then run FAQ 31: Reset / Reclaim PMS on DSM 7 (Not Authorized - Locked Out). This will unclaim, then re-claim, your server.

Actually, my mistake, the Plex folder is there (I’ve been sick so working on this between consciousness so just a brain fart). I’ll proceed with the previous instructions, I verified the db file is in that directory. Sorry for the confusion..

Followed the earlier instructions with the Plex folder still existing and it was a not a success. My Library folder is gone form the Plex folder but did not migrate to the PlexMediaServer. Nothing was migrated to the PMS folder. Not sure what else to try. Seems now all my metadata is gone. I changed th epermissions as instructed on the Plex foler. However when I went back after the installation those permissions we gone. Something isn’t working right. Is there someone I can just pay to get this fixed?

In the root of the Plex folder, you should see a Migration.log file. Open that file in Text Editor (install from package center if you need to) and read what it says.

It will tell you if the migration was successful or not.

By your account, it seems that the data did migrate, but you may be seeing other issues right now.

Tell us, or better still, show us what you are seeing and let us know how things should look etc…

Here is the log:

Here is what’s in the Plex folder:

Here’s whats in the PMS folder:

Judging by the log, nothing was permitted to transfer but then where did my library and other files go?

The migration was successful, except for the transcoder driver files.

I assume that is because they are DSM 6 specific as explained by the Operation not permitted notation in the log.

In the PlexMediaServer folder, open the appdata folder, then open the Plex Media Server folder, then you will see ALL of your Plex server data folders and files.

Do NOT touch anything in the Plex Media Server folder unless you are instructed to do so.

Also, NEVER place any media files anywhere inside the PlexMediaServer folder.

Your Plex libraries exist only as data files on the drive, it is the Plex program that converts them into the libraries you see in Plex/Web.

Now, can you tell us what issues you are having with Plex, since migration is no longer an issue?

Ok, I see all the files inside the AppData folder but I’m still having the same problems as before. I’m still getting a “page not working” message when I try to open PMS from inside Package Center in Synology. I get a “Mo Libraries Found” when I click on Libraries from any of my Plex apps, from TV, smart phone, ipad, etc. So something is still not working properly.

Make sure Plex is running on the NAS.

Then try opening Plex by typing http://NAS-IP-Address:32400 into your browser.

If it fails, then stop the server from running, then restart the server and wait 3 minutes.

Then open File Station on the NAS and navigate to: /PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server, right click on the Logs folders and select Compress to Logs.zip.

Attach the Logs.zip file to your post, thanks.

Here ya go. Thanks.

From your logs, I see no library or media related activity at all.

At some point in your adventures you have managed to eliminate your old server.

Go to Plex Downloads and download the latest version of Plex for DSM 7.

Install the update manually in Package Center.

Open Plex/Web and go to Plex Settings > Server > Libraries and create your libraries there.

I’ve only followed the instructions mentioned here. I figured it got all erased when the Library folder went away.

Even if I don’t have libraries, shouldn’t I be able to open the PMS from the Package Center? I’m still confused on why when I press Open it shows “Page not working” message.

I am not sure why it does not open from Package Center, but you should be able to open Plex/Web using http://NAS-IP-Address:32400.

You should bookmark that in your browser to make things easier.

All I get is an XML file when I use just the IP addres plus :32400
