I know there’s the managed account feature. I use it but I don’t want to. It’s neither here nor there. After enduring it for years, I figured I’d post a feature request, and see where that gets me.
I’d like the ability to create, and manage local user accounts. These user accounts can be used just like any Plex-hosted account. Except that the user account entity will live only on my local server.
As an admin I can create a user account, and this user account is not on or associated with Plex.tv.
The user account can assign and manage their own password.
The user account logins with credentials stored on my local server.
I don’t understand why the Plex team is resisting adding proper, normal user management. Are they concerned with losing control over their users? Will this in some way cause revenue loss? Could monetizing user account incentivize them? Say a Plex Pass account includes ability to create N local users. Each additional would cost X. Or something similar.
I did search for my issue on this board, but did not come upon those two threads. The first seems to be concerned mostly with redundancy and availability. The second one covers what I want.
But the situation is depressing. Feature request from 2013 and still hasn’t be addressed. I wish Plex would clearly post that they would not do it, and why. Bah… dead end conversion…
Well… as the intro post for the feature suggestion category states: Plex won’t usually comment on suggestions unless they have follow-up questions. Nor do they comment on their roadmap.
Things not getting implemented basically translates to they’re not doing it yet – there’s no final rejection but also no confirmation.
As for the matter at hand…
Let’s close this thread as a duplicate and comment/vote in the one linked above instead. This will help avoid distracting/dispersing attention due to “competing” suggestions.
