Gapless plaback like we had in 1998 with Winamp!
Did we lost all the brains solving the millennium bugs?
It’s funny you should mention Winamp because I just came across an email from Plex News regarding their new Plexamp app and they can’t help but make the comparison:
Audiophiles of yesteryear will fondly recall Winamp, a popular media player giving users a wide variety of options and flexibility to enjoy their music of choice. To reignite the music-lover’s flame, Plexamp was created to offer a full-featured Plex music player for your desktop.
If anyone is interested, or cares:
And of course, one of the main features mentioned about Plexamp is it has, “Gapless Playback”. So I excitedly installed Plexamp to give it a try but quickly found out that Plex’s definition of “Gapless” is much different from my own…
I’ve always considered “Gapless” playback as a seamless transition between audio tracks; I’m guessing I am not alone in this matter. But from what I can tell, the Plexamp app is using a ~80ms crossfade between tracks which, from my experience, is causing an annoyingly audible blip in the playback between almost every transitional audio track. I find the same issue is present in both the Windows and Mac version of the app. And to cover my bases, no, this issue does not exist when listening to the audio files directly.
So in short, it seems that Plex still does not have a Gapless (truly seamless gapless) playback option available, even though they’re beginning to advertise that an option is available…
Don’t get me wrong, I get that Plexamp is a new experimental 1.0 app developed (in Plex’s own words), “by a handful of people inside Plex in their spare time”. But this is very discouraging to me. Gapless (truly seamless gapless) playback is something many users have wanted since Plex first supported music files. I’m still hoping they’ll figure out how to make gapless a standard across all platforms offered; the HTML page being my first preference. But given how long this thread alone has been open, how many other features they’ve developed in the mean time and the fact that the only step toward gapless is yet another app they could only give attention to in their spare time, yet still fails to do gapless right, I’m beginning to think it’ll never happen. So here I am, yet again, whining about my first world problems…
