Get rid of Exo Player

Hi there i have a new chomecast with Andriod TV and in my opinion plex and its current player are useless on this device and heres why.

  1. My new Chromcast with Andriod TV is connected via ethernet, yet all of my HD content on plex keeps buffering. it does not matter what settings it set to it keeps buffering.

  2. If I use this native app on my wired LG TV or my Dads LG TV that is wirelesley connected, they both stream the contend perfectly with no buffering.

  3. I even accessed my plex movies through the VLC app and that streamed the
    movie perfectly.

  4. I have also tied streaming in kodi and it streams perfectly

SO my conclusion is either plex itself and or the player it uses is no good for chromcast with Android TV.

After googling this, this issue appears to be an ongoing issue that has been brought up many times, so why does plex not simply fix this, or move from exo player to VLC or use the player that kodi uses. or allow users to select which player they want to use. As at this rate I realy close to ditching plex and moving to one of the other alternatives

+1 from me!

… but I’m using a Shield TV Pro 2017, and there it works Ok, but not as good as the kodi player…

there’s one other possibility.
it’s the chromecast causing the problem.

i have zero issues with playback on both my shields (which also uses exo player for plex). that shows that exo player is capable of playing content with no issues.

i regularly play full BR UHD remux files over wifi and they all play flawlessly.

providing logs whilst they are buffering would probably help, along with the versions of the client and server you are currently using.

as a side note, just for info, exoplayer is actually created by google themselves for use on their android platform - albeit plex uses their own forked modified version.

Well, I am on the latest Shield Pro and have difficulty with Exo Player, too. My Shield is hardwired to a Gigabit switch which is connected in turn to a Gigabit port on my “core” switch, an Aruba S2500-24P. All the wiring is Cat6, and the runs aren’t very long. My Plex server is connected directly to the Aruba with 10GbE fiber in the same rack.

Still, I frequently have trouble with buffering when trying to watch 1080P or 4K videos - not to mention all the rendering/demuxing issues. When I use VLC to connect directly to the SAMBA shares on my TrueNAS server (same box runs Plex Server) every video works properly and there’s never any buffering.

that doesn’t sound like an exo player issue IMO.

no issues playing full 4k BR remux files over my LAN (even plays flawlessly over WIFI)

Coincidentally, there is a brand new release of ExoPlayer today:

As long as Plex keeps up with those, I don’t see any issue either

plex use their own fork of exo player, so don’t necessarily use the google release.

Well, they last updated ExoPlayer about a month after the release of 2.16.1.

I believe some TVs have super subpar ethernet ports. Trying to play 4k on a 100mbps port or less could easily choke one out. Try it wireless on the same TV and see if the results are the same.

almost every TV has a subpar 100Mbps ethernet port, and on most TVs the WIFI isn’t that much better, the build them to spec to suit streaming services, so there is no incentive for them to use better hardware.

Well, I sideloaded iPerf (iPerf Magic as recommended by Nvidia in the Nvidia Shield forum) onto my Shield Pro. Started iPerf on my TrueNAS server (iPerf -s -w 2m) and then ran iPerf on the Shield (iPerf -c 192.168.0.15 [NAS ip address] -w 2m -t 30s -i 1).

My average transfer speed over 4 runs was 927mb/s, so I don’t think that’s my issue!

[As a side note, this is the first time I did LAN speed testing and I was disappointed that from the TrueNAS server to my PC (Windows 11, AMD Ryzen 5800X, Mellanox 10GbE NIC, OM3 Sfp+ xcvrs) I was only able to get a little over 5Gb/s. ]

Good morning

I hope everyone is well

Can someone in the plex community or a plex engineer answer this for me please.

  1. I am using the new Chromecast with Android TV and the plex app, a certain film or two in MP4 format, keeps buffering, stopping.
  2. I have changed every setting etc and this has not improved the situation one bit why.
  3. I have streamed the same movie to my dads LG smart tv and the same plex app plays the film perfectly. Why?
  4. I have also turned off my Chromecast and played the same file on my LG TV with plex app and it plays perfectly why?
  5. I have also downloaded the VLC app and the same film in question plays perfectly through that app.
  6. I have also tied the same film in Kodi, and it plays perfectly there as well.

Why is it after all my testing that on every other device / app plays the film the perfectly but, Plex app on Chromecast seems to struggle with certain films. I did think it use to be the Chromecast, now I think it could be the app itself on the Chromecast.

Why has this not ben fixed, why can’t you give uses the option to use different players.

you should provide logs, and probably start a new thread for your issue rather than piggybacking on to this.

the logs will always tell you the reason why something is struggling to play

FYI, this topic/post was originally made by myself, I was just posting another update.

The logs do NOT always tell you the reason something is struggling to play and he IS the original poster.

how do you know unless the logs are provided?
if the issue is related to plex then the logs WILL give the reason. if the logs show no reason then the issue is almost certainly not plex related.

IF the issue is related to exo player then fair enough (without logs no-one will know), but no-one knows that, so creating a separate support thread for that is going to help you (as this thread clearly isn’t a support thread that plex are going to participate in).

This isn’t always true as Plex gives so many generic error messages for many issues that could translate to being anything. This is a fact otherwise everybody would know why Plex continualy breaks every release. Are some of them specific, yes, are all of them, not even close.

Trying to gate keep someone elses thread is not aright. We all understand you’re frustrated with Plex too…

am i?

this thread is a “get rid of exo player” thread which is simply not going to happen, and in reality is a pointless thread anyway.

troubleshooting specific issues in this thread is pointless, plex staff won’t look in here for issues that people want resolve.
