Server Version#: How do I look this up?
Player Version#: not sure
So I have the ioSafe 214 that houses my libraries. I’ve downloaded Plex Media Server 1.13.4.5271-200287a86, but it won’t run. Does this mean I can’t run Plex MS on this device?
If I can get past this, I’d wouldn’t mind having a list of next steps to get my NAS running as my main server.
PMS 1.13 is a very old version. I’m not sure how far the installation process ran, but if complete, uninstall it from the NAS. If they exist, delete the Plex user and the Plex shared folder. FYI, the Plex shared folder is for the exclusive use of Plex Media Center. Do not place any of your media files in that folder. Plex will not work correctly if you place your media there.
The ioSafe 214 is the same as a Synology DS214. Download the current ARMv7 version for x14 series Synology from plex.tv/download and perform a manual installation.
Proceed with the rest of the installation as shown in the Installation & Setup document.
Thanks. I got it running kinda, mainly by updating the the Synology operating system. I’ve created the server on Plex, and computers on my local network can see it. However, they have no content. When I go to manage library I’m asked to select folders…
But after all that I’m still told the library is empty. What am I missing? I already had the music in folders on the NAS, so I pointed Plex at those. Is it somehow necessary for the media to be in the Plex folder?
As mentioned earlier, do not put any files in /volume1/Plex. Doing so will cause problems and Plex will not function correctly. That folder is reserved for Plex Media Server use. There are warning messages to the same effect in multiple languages in /volume1/Plex.
Your movies/music/etc can reside in any folder except those mentioned in the setup document and FAQ (i.e. not in /plex or Synology folders such as /video).
Plex does have requirements about how media is organized within a folder.
For album oriented music, content should have each artist in their own directory, with each album as a separate subdirectory within it. Example: Music/ArtistName/AlbumName/TrackNumber - TrackName.ext
There are similar requirements for movies and TV shows.
