In Plex Media Server I cannot find my video assets from my NAS Synology DS414 NAS

DS414
DSM 6.2.4-25556

When I install the standard Plex Media Server or some of the manual versions online published I cannot find or see my NAS video assets in:
http://nas:32400/web/index.html#!/get-plex-media-server

The manual versions I downloaded and tried from

But not sure which one to chose, some of them give an error after uploading.

Every time i click on My Media Files I get redirtected to installe the media server package
Is it possible that my Synology NAS DS414 isnt compatible anymore with Plex Media Server?
And if so whats the workaround (if possible)?

I installed already the plex security key as trusted publisher under the section of package center.

When I loook at the compatible versions of NAS I find my DS414
But the software transcoding is set to NO but also Accelerated Transcoding NO
Does this mean my NAS cant be used as a Media Server?

When I used Plex client on a notebook I could find my NAS and watch Plex on some TV devices but only when the notebook was online. Thats why I want to use Plex server to avoid this.

Thanks in advance

Christoph

May I offer this as a setup guide ? It’s Synology specific.

Can you please elaborate a bit more about what you mean by “see” ?
I ask because your media should be visible on every player once the server is made part of your account.

The package ARMv7 x13 seemed to be a succesfull installation.

However after installing and running/opening Plex from DSM package the following URL opens:
http :// nas:32400 / web

But there I get an error:

Deze site is niet bereikbaar

nas heeft de verbinding geweigerd.

Probeer dit eens:

ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED

Site not connected because connection refused. I use the latest CHrome version.
Is there something I must extra allow in Chrome or DSM?
I would like to remark also that the url to open my synology DNS is still unsecured :frowning:

https://nas:5001/

Maybe because of being less secured the connection is blocked? How can I solve this to make the url secured?

Or should I post this in another firewall topic?

image

this is what I get…it says Not secured in red before the url
Or is this normal and nothing to worry about? Or better make the change like you mentioned?

thanks

Hi ChuckPa

This is what I see

Port forwarding is made on the Router and Open Port Check Tool - Test Port Forwarding on Your Router says now Port 32400 is open on 178.116.213.67.

So when i start Plex Media server from my NAS you see my screenshot above.
I cannot see my video folder on my NAS. However I gave the user plex the read/write permission and I installed the key of plex like suggested o,n the forum.

Any help is welcome

May I have a few details please?

  1. Are you accessing the server from your LAN or from remote?
  2. If you are on your LAN,
    a. IP address of the computer ?
    b. IP address of the Syno ?

Hi Chuck

I access Plex media server from the url http://nas:32400/web/index.html#!/

Also http://178.116.213.67:32400/web/index.html#!/ would work

IP address from my computer is [178.116.213.67]
IP address from my NAS synology is 192.168.0.212 (internal address)
The DNS of my NAS syno is 195.130.131.5

@christoph_hanne_gmail_com

When you access the Syno at 192.168.0.212, from your LAN computer address (192.168.0.x) , does it work?

I am asking because you have several different addresses flying around here.

Plex’s security requirement is that both computer and server be on the same RFC-1918 subnet (192.168.x.x works for this) when first configuring.

After the server is configured and made part of your account,
You can then add domain name and/or access from any IP address.

I dont know if I do understand your question Chuck.

Plex media server does open and Im logged in succesfully through:
http://nas:32400/web/index.html#!/

or through http://178.116.213.67:32400/web/index.html#!/

However on both I do not see my video folder there which is on my NAS

I’m sorry, I misunderstood.

Recapping,

  1. You are into the server
  2. You create a Library section
  3. Plex can see the folder
  4. Plex cannot see the contents of that folder ?

If I’m understanding the problem now,

  1. If you’re using the pre-defined Synology Video/Videos shared folder – Don’t. DSM 6 reserves that for Video Station use even if Video Station isn’t installed. The same is true of Audio/Music and Photo(s).

  2. Therefore, Create new shared folder(s) of your liking. As you create these, remember to grant user plex permission to Read, or Read/Write the media as appropriate.

  3. Now change the Plex library section folder list to point to the new media shared folder(s).

Please advise of your progress & success

That was a good attemt Chuck I didn’t think of before.

I now created a new folder in my NAS “Films”. That folder is for admin and plex user able to read/write. In that folder i placed 1 mkv-moviefile.

However when I start Plex media server with my plex account i still see nothing in the section of My Media…

Thanks
