Plex Media Server install on Synology DS220+

Greetings-

I’m looking for help installing Plex Media Server on my Synology DS220+ NAS. On the Plex Media Server download page, I’ve made the assumption that the package I need to download would be Synology (DSM 7) → Intel 64 Bit. so far so good? it would download to my mac download folder, but then I’m trying to move it to my NAS and install it there, but after decompressing, I see no type of install file… can someone tell me where I’m going wrong here?

After spending some time fumbling with this, I noticed there was a ‘Plex Media Server Beta’ program in the Synology drive package center. I tried installing this and I’ve got it to the point where it see’s my NAS, but when I try setting up and scanning my library folder for say music, it does not find anything.

If you haven’t been able to tell already, I’m not that great with these types of setups so any tips or tricks will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

A few things you need to read because Plex on DSM 7 is radically different than DSM 6 which means a lot of the existing threads and how-to’s are outdated.

On DSM 7, username PlexMediaServer must be granted permission to read the shared folder(s).

You might want to read a bit of this to familiarize yourself with setting things up
(there is a special FAQ at the bottom of this post for first time setup)

I do recommend you upgrade from the Package Center BETA app to one you download from https://plex.tv/downloads as soon as possible.

It was created for when DSM 7 was beta. It does have a lot of problems now that DSM 7 is final release.

Thanks so much for the quick response.

I was able to get the permissions set up so now I can see my files in Plex Media Server. In the Beta version, they give an update available message with a link that downloads the updated media server file (same as from the Plex website) to my macs download folder.

Problem I have from here is how to install. Before I noticed there was a beta software package on my NAS, I was struggling with this also. Can you tell me, on a MAC, how this install/upgrade works? Steps to be taken? I tried to move the compressed folder onto the NAS previously, unpacked it, and tried to find an install/executable file to run, but only seems to be mostly script files. Any detailed steps on how to do this on a Mac is greatly appreciated.
