Global Music Videos folder - videos not appearing in library

I’m trying to set up a Global Music Videos folder but Plex (1.8.2.4209 running on Win7 x64 SP1) isn’t detecting my music videos unless I add an MP3 in the same folder as each video. The steps I’ve followed are:

  • Set the local music video path in Settings -> Server -> Agents -> Artists to\\NASshare\Videos\Music\, dragged the Local Media Assets (Artists) agent to the top and enabled it
  • Renamed my video files with the appropriate suffixes e.g:
\\NASshare\Videos\Music\Queen\1974-11 - Live At The Rainbow '74\Queen - Live At The Rainbow '74-concert.mkv or \\NASshare\Videos\Music\Queen\Queen - Live At The Rainbow '74-concert.mkv (neither are detected)
  • Created a Music library named ‘Music Videos’ with the \\NASshare\Videos\Music\ folder added as the sole folder in the library and Agent set to Personal Media Artists.

Am I missing something here? I thought the whole point of having a Global Music Videos folder was to not have to store music and video files together? The second half of this support article gives the impression that music videos can be stored entirely separate from audio files and still be detected - is this not the case or am I doing something wrong (e.g. creating the wrong library type)?

If you do the global route, you need only create artist folders and drop the appropriate videos in their folder. The catch is the folder has to be named exactly as Plex names the artist. For example, Moody Blues has to be named The Moody Blues, because that’s how Plex matched them. Also, these videos don’t show unless there is at least one audio file for that artists in your music library. I’ve also had to do a rescan of an artist to pick up new additions.

Yes I followed that guide before posting (and meant to link to it in my OP). I’ve mapped \NASshare\Videos\Music to V:\ and replaced the UNC path with the drive letter in the library’s folder path. My folders are named correctly according to artist and all the videos in them have the appropriate suffixes. I’ve also set the local music video path in Settings -> Server -> Agents -> Artists to V:\ as well. However, this hasn’t made any difference - performing a library scan still doesn’t detect any videos unless I add an audio file to the folder which would completely defeat the purpose

Is this by design (which would make the documentation inaccurate), a bug or is there something else I can try?

I do believe you need to have some music by the Artist in your Music library, before the video will show up though.

This is what I’ve been wondering - I thought the whole purpose of the Global Music Videos folder was to have Plex pick up music videos stored in their own folder completely separate from any audio files and have them in a separate library. As I mentioned, the music videos are detected with no problem if I add audio files in the same folder but I really don’t want to have to do this and the guide above gives the impression that it isn’t necessary.

OK that makes sense - thanks for the clarification!
