Where exactly are we then supposed to see these music videos? As part of what library? I’m not seeing anything show up anywhere in Plex Media Server. Do you have to create another library specifically for videos? What type? Music? Movies? This sounds like a nice feature but the setup is unclear.
After much trial and error… finally got this to work.
The music videos stored in the Global Music Videos Folder show up in the Music library at the artist level. Make sure that the Music library settings have the Agent set to Personal Media Artists. Only then did the videos show up under the Artist in my Music library.
I was able to get it to work after I flattened my Music Videos folder. so I had to put all the videos in the \Music Videos folder and not \music videos\artist
I found that, contrary to advice at the link, that subfolders of \MusicVideos\Artist do work but only if put a recognisable audio track\album in there with it. I also found that the new iOS app does not link to the videos from the main music library, presumably a bug in the current version. Music videos aren’t even an option from music libraries in the Samsung smart TV app…
I also was able to get the global music video folder to work, but only after much trial and error.
In your server settings under search agents for artists, find the “Local Media Assets (Artists)” search agent. Enable the agent by checking its check box, click the gear to specify its settings and enter the location of your global music video folder (e.g. /mnt/musicvideos), and drag this agent to the top of the agents list.
to use artist sub-folders within the global music video folder (e.g. /mnt/musicvideos/Weird.Al.Yankovic/Eat.It-video.m4v), you need to drop an mp3 file from the same artist in each artist sub-folder before the agent will start recognizing the music video files. That mp3 file will need to have its artist info correctly set in its metadata.
make sure to append “-video” to the name of each music video file before the file type extension (e.g. /musicvideos/Weird.Al.Yankovic/Eat.It-video.m4v)
in the settings for your standard music library, use the “add folders” option to add the path to the global music video folder (e.g. /mnt/musicvideos )
Click the “update library” button in your music library and the search agent should start finding your music videos
Now when you click on an artist in your music library, you should see a list of music videos for the current artist underneath the standard list of audio files for that artist.
@danhammari I’m a Plex Pass user (Win version 0.9.16.6) and I just noticed that sub-folders work without having to place an MP3 in each sub-directory. I went to the Plex artist page and clicked “Refresh” button and videos instantly showed up.
in the settings for your standard music library, use the “add folders” option to add the path to the global music video folder (e.g. /mnt/musicvideos )
This was the critical - and missing piece - of the jigsaw for me. A simple step to fix weeks of pulling my hair out and endless rebuilds of the libraries!
It seems that this is an either/or situation. Either you have ALL videos for an artist in the global music video directory OR you add all videos inline. But it doesn’t seem to work if you have a few inline videos and then try to add artist interviews from the global video directory. They just don’t show up for me.
EDIT: I’d love to move all videos to the global music video directory, but this way, music videos won’t show up with the respective songs (that “TV” icon) anymore.
I’m trying to set up a Global Music Videos folder but Plex (1.8.1.4139 running on Win7 x64 SP1) still isn’t detecting my music videos unless I add an MP3 in the same folder as each video. The steps I’ve followed are:
Set the local music video path in Settings -> Server -> Agents -> Artists to \\NASshare\Videos\Music\, dragged the Local Media Assets (Artists) agent to the top and enabled it
Renamed my video files with the appropriate suffixes e.g:
\\NASshare\Videos\Music\Queen\1974-11 - Live At The Rainbow '74\Queen - Live At The Rainbow '74-concert.mkv or \\NASshare\Videos\Music\Queen\Queen - Live At The Rainbow '74-concert.mkv (neither are detected)
Created a Music library named ‘Music Videos’ with the \\NASshare\Videos\Music\ folder added as the sole folder in the library and Agent set to Personal Media Artists.
Am I missing something here? I thought the whole point of having a Global Music Videos folder was to not have to store music and video files together? The second half of this support article gives the impression that music videos can be stored entirely separate from audio files and still be detected - is this not the case or am I doing something wrong (e.g. creating the wrong library type)?
Hi all
I’m having issues getting my music videos/concerts etc showing up as well. I am trying to use a global music videos folder but nothing seems to make them show up. Did anyone else find something that made this start to work? I’ve added the folder to the local media assests and dragged it to the top in each. my video is named as: City And Colour - City And Colour Live-concert.mkv (ie. without a sub folder). I’ve also added the music videso global folder to the Music library as an additional folder.
@OttoKerner this really is an awesome feature, and taking it for a test drive I can make it work by placing the music videos in the root directory or an artist directory within the Global Music Videos folder.
However, I have nearly 2000 music videos, many of which are duplicates and split out by surround (Dolby,DTS, DTS-MA) and stereo (Dolby, PCM) versions, then placed in subfolders within the artist folders accordingly.
My music videos all follow the Artist_Name - Descriptive_Name.ext format. If this feature would search all subfolders within the Global Music Videos folder then it would work without having to make my music video library file/folder structure less organized.
So…why was it not developed to search all subfolders within the Global Music Videos folder? More curiousity than a complaint at this point.
I have one music video that is named “Muppet Show - Mahna Mahna-video.mp4”
Since there was some talk about meta data, I have added the artist to be “Muppet Show”
