Music Videos

I have followed the article on music videos for global folder. A few of my artists are showing music videos but not all of them. I am wondering what I’m doing wrong. The global folder has the artists folders in it with the music videos in them. like below
/globalfolder/artistname/videoname
I have added the global folder to the settings>extras section in my server.
Like I said some artists the music videos show up and some don’t. I have refreshed metadata for these artists many times and they dont show up. I have even given it the night for it to update and they are still not showing up.

If you need any logs or any other information please ask.

Some things to try:

Are your music files in a similar folder structure, like /music/artistname/trackname? If so, is the artistname identical in both folder names (I’m thinking of extra spaces, leading spaces, invisible characters, possibly upper/lowercase differences, …)? Try copying the artistname from the music folder and pasting it into the global folder name.

Do the video filenames have the ‘-video’ at the end? If so, make sure there’s no space between the hyphen and “video.” If it’s not there, try adding it. Plex should default to “-video” if it’s not there, but no harm trying.

Are all the video files in the same format (mp4, mkv)? I don’t think they need to be, but it might give a clue if this is happening to mkv’s but not mp4’s.

Is your OS Windows, Mac, or Linux?

Last ditch, because I’m not sure if Plex does this, but it might be that Plex is looking at the artist name in an embedded tag in the music files. If you’re using the ‘Prefer local metadata’ option, make sure the embedded album artist name is the same as the folder name. If you’re not using ‘Prefer local metadata,’ maybe check that there’s no embedded ‘album artist’ tag.

Thanks. I will go through all of this. As a heads up all of the videos are in .mkv
I am running plex in docker on UnRaid OS.

I’m not familiar with UnRaid. Is that a Linux OS? If so, then I would also check the file permissions.

Something just occurred to me, which may eliminate some testing: I don’t think Plex can read embedded tags from MKV files.

Plex doesn’t care about metadata for music videos. It will be entirely based on the folder and filenames.

Also, do you have music for all of these artists? Plex will not list an Artist unless there is at least 1 song. If there isn’t an Artist, there won’t be any music videos.

Yes I have music for them. AC/DC is an example. I have all but a couple of their albums. I have 43 music videos for them and none are showing up. But most of the other artists that I have they do show up.

Hmm. The folder needs to be named to match the artist. Not sure how you would name the folder “AC/DC”. This might not actually work for them. Let me test.

I got it to work by using “AC DC”. I just stuck some random videos in there and it worked. I tested using Windows and not Unraid so the OS may have something to do with it.

Without a plex pass you have no option for a global music folder

I have music videos from artists that I don’t have albums for

Now what?

All I want is a stand-alone library for a music video collection that has some basic metadata

Yeah Im thinking Unraid is part of this problem for this band. Just did what you did and unless its still thinking somewhere the videos are not showing up. But Black Sabbath is another band that the music videos are not showing up.

My first advice would be to check file permissions.

Folder naming for AC/DC will probably be a bit different for everyone, my folder is named AC_DC, but the matching with the music video path is a bit lenient and it won’t care about any punctuation differences between you may have (e.g. AC DC == AC-DC == AC_DC, etc.)
