@ChuckPa

Hi ChuckPA

Getting a bit desperate , I know that you are a linux guru, so I hope that I might can get some assistance from you.

For starters I can say that PMS works fine on the Synology, no issues.

Then I have:
Intel NUC with Ubuntu Desktop running PMS
Synology DS1019+ Raid 6

I have created a “server” user on the Synology with RW permissions on my Media folder.

I have installed cifs-utils on my Intel NUC so I can mount the shared folder on the Synology.
On my NUC I have created a mount folder /home/plex/Synology

The mount command I use is:

sudo mount -t cifs -o username=server,password=thepasswordImade,uid=1000 //192.168.0.2/Media ~/Synology

Once that is done, I can see the media content on my /home/plex/Synology folder, so far so good. I add directories in Plex, indexing, works.
I have Animations4K and 4K which is movies.

On my Samsung TV I can play the animation I choose, works without any issues. On the LG the tv stutters and is laggy. Same media. I tried to move the cables around from one switch to another , makes no difference.
Anyways here comes the strange part  .

My 4K movie folder isnt updating meta data now, I cant play anything from that directory. I checked permissions and it seems to look exactly the same. It worked yesterday and all good.
After I was done testing, I demounted the folder on the nuc, shutdown the NAS .

Today remounted , and now I cant play anything in the 4K folder, animation4K still works on my Samsung without any problems, LG still the same stuttering?

Do you have any ideas what im doing wrong here?

I tried NFS but either im doing something seriously wrong, or I cant seem to get it work proberly. It seems that cifs seem better somehow.

Thanks

Did you check the permission on the NAS or on the NUC? Make sure you check both (or just re-apply desired permissions recursively). Also, could you post some details about the permissions you have set up on the respective folders?

Any particular reason for mounting the share to inside the home folder? I assume Plex is running as it’s own user (the default). I personally would avoid user A accessing the home folder of user B at all times. I usually create a mount point under /mnt, so /mnt/Synology for example. You can still use uid=1000 for mounting, but then no other users needs access to your user’s home folder.

Hi @cetteup

The user on the NUC is plex to makes things easier for me which also has sudo access. so it shouldnt cause the problem.

I noticed one strange thing on the LG tv.

If I go to my Animation4K folder on the TV and want to start up a Anime. I know that my TV can’t play sound with TRUEHD 7.1 so I have to manually set it to AC3 5.1 . I noticed once I started the movie, its started to transcode. I went to the menu on the plex on the movie title, but the settings where not there. Everything was empty.

I then deleted my entire Animation4K folder, rescanned, and now the menus are there for the sound settings on the specific animation. I can now choose AC3 5.1 and its working.

But the problems seem to occur once I have pinned the libraries. I had major issues with it last night on both 4K movies and the Animation4K folder. Once I deleted the libraries from Plex and readded, its working perfectly .

Im lost for ideas on this :frowning:

Had problems on my Samsung and LG tv .I was so close to give up. But then gave it a shot to rescan.

I hope that I don’t have to rescan every time the NAS is demounted and booted up?

That sounds less like a permission issue and more like some strange behavior with the share mount.

Could you post the log archive from your server? Last night’s logs should still be in there and might contain some details on what happened.

Logs are disabled .

I can try enable the logs.

But just to make sure . If I create “server” as user on the NAS , on the NUC I use the “server” in the mount command with mount I made , correct? If I download directly to the mount - I can see that the new content has “server” as the user permission on the NAS. Will it cause any problems?

Please do.

Yes, that is correct. I would, however, suggest saving the credentials to a file and adding an entry to /etc/fstab [How to] instead of mounting the share manually after each reboot.

You are reading and writing as “server”, so you should not encounter any issues there.

Thank you so much for your fast replies @cetteup .

I saw that ChuckPA made this guide: How to mount media from your NAS shares on Linux using CIFS / SMB

Something that confuses me… driving me crazy

I see that he wants to use “plex” as user , but after the installation is done on the NAS with PMS, it creates a user “plex” automatically with a password . Can I change the password for that plex user and use the plex user instead of the “server” user I created?

Thanks @trumpy81

Well I do have the PMS installed on the NUC due better CPU performance. I just saw that a plex user was present on the NAS because I had PMS installed on my NAS earlier.

And im using “plex” user on the NUC for my entire plex system. Just seems to have some minor issues which I really cant allocate my self :frowning:

Are there any special settings in PMS I need to be aware of if im running on a shared mount?

Oki gonna do a test again today.

If I demount - would it cause any “damage” or break the libraries I made in Plex? Because the problem I had occured again this morning ( after a demount the night before ). I usually close my NAS when im not using it, just to save power  .
I got it to work again if I deleted the libraries I created and remade them. Then it was working again.

Okay  so that might cause the problems I had?
Because the server scans over night, and I also had empty trash enabled but it didnt delete anything though, the meta data in the libraries was still there. After the server was reconnected and mounted, the paths were OK.

Thank you so much guys for your great support . I will change and test over night again
