PMS Directories Disappearing

Server Version#: 4.30.2
Player Version#:

I have plex media server installed on ubuntu. I have a synology nas and I have it mounted via nfs in fstab. Directories folder disappears in plex media server. I had this issue with plex server on my nas and I changed the plex permissions and that seems to have fixed it. I’m not sure how to change permissions for plex for a mounted nas directory though.

Best have a look at this post in the Tips & Tricks section:

Based on that guide if my mount point is /media/DiskStation, do you think that setting it’s permissions via chmod -R 755 would be enough to rectify the issue?

1st – I think the general recommendation is not to use /media/ to mount your drives.
2nd – it goes further than doing a chmod after it’s mounted; it’s about how you mount that drive to ensure the local plex user can access the files.

I likethat /media/DiskStation mounts to the sidebar. Is there a way to have that with a different directory?

Since Gnome took away the “Bookmark this location” for most of us,
Add the entry manually to the ./config/gtk-*/bookmarks file.

ile:///nas/season seasonal
file:///nas/request request
file:///nas/projects projects
file:///nas/sata2 sata2
file:///nas/videos videos
file:///run/media/chuck/60CE7B94CE7B60E8/Other Other
[chuck@lizum gtk-3.0.512]$ pwd
/home/chuck/.config/gtk-3.0
[chuck@lizum gtk-3.0.513]$

You can manually mount the diskstation anywhere you want.
Gnome’s Nautilus automounter is the ‘permissions problem’ and has always been.

Create a manual mount to any non-conflicting location and then add the bookmark manually.

The reasons for not using /media, with how to mitigate for local drives but also applies to network mounts, are here:

This guide doesn’t work for nas mounts I assume?

Been reading about running pms using another user besides plex. Would that fix the issues for /media/DiskStation?

The first support article (“Mounting NFS network shares”) works fine for NAS or basically any device that’s providing a network share using the NFS protocol.
The second support article (“Using EXT, NTFS, or other format drives (internal or external) on Linux”) explains why you shouldn’t use /media/.

It’s technically possible to associate Plex locally with a different user – however that’s got nothing to do with the particular issue at hand.

I’ve moved the mount point to /nas/DiskStation but the directory is still disappearing in plex

Did you also apply the instructions on how to mount the drive so Plex can see it?
You say the drive disappears… do you mean Plex can see its content and looses it then again?

Plex is seeing the drive. Not sure why it keeps disappearing though.

So you add it by clicking on Browse for Media Folder, picking a folder and clicking Add. Plex is showing it on the screen you’ve just shared – and later it’s gone or later it’s no longer accessible?

The folder disappears, the content remains but when new media is added to the nas, if the folder has disappeared new content isn’t detected. The media still plays though. Is the issue that it’s mounted in the / folder where only root owns the folders?

yes, that could be the issue.

PS: I take it if the folder is disappearing you’re also no longer able to play one of the movies / shows of that folder, are you?

Everything still plays which is what I don’t understand.

If I may restate, which I’ve stated throughout the forum and in the How-To’s.

  1. Create the mount directory ( /nas here)
  2. Create the subdirectories to mount the specific shares on (Movies, television, etc)
  3. sudo chmod -R 755 /nas
  4. Now mount the individual shares (ip.addr.of.syno:/volume1/movies /nas/movies nfs …etc… ) via /etc/fstab

If using SMB, one is asking for trouble with Linux & Synology. (user plex vs your username)
NFS avoids this problem entirely.

Plex web does not refresh as one thinks.

You state /nas/movies /nas/tv shows etc? Would having just /nas/Diskstation and all folders in there mess things up? I’ve tried everything you’ve said. I’m using nfs.
