Google home integration

Must have feature.

Wot? This isn’t true.

@elan is the technical setup a problem with this issue and how Google approaches actions creation for devs?

@elan So what is the truth…

Some follow up would be nice…

By deductive reasoning the truth would automatically be that Amazon is not a big funding source of Plex and if Google Home was added they wouldn’t pull any of the non existing support they aren’t giving.

An employee responded on reddit regarding the lack of Google Home support:

We can’t get into specifics but we can say there are technical limitations preventing us from supporting it at this time. Our goal is to build a product that matches the capability of our Alexa skill which isn’t possible today. We understand that many people are asking for it and we’re working with Google to figure out how we can best support the platform.

The truth is what the employee ⇡ wrote on Reddit.

I misunderstood the “easy” webhooks directions that Plex provides in their help manual.

I created a whole bunch of actions over at IFTTT (I’ve since deleted them):

https://maker.ifttt.com/trigger/media.play/with/key/[your personal key here]
https://maker.ifttt.com/trigger/media.pause/with/key/[your personal key here]
https://maker.ifttt.com/trigger/media.resume/with/key/[your personal key here]
https://maker.ifttt.com/trigger/media.stop/with/key/[your personal key here]

But you only need one webhook URL otherwise Plex makes a call to each URL.
Anyway, IFTTT has support for webhooks, but the Plex developers need to build support.

Until then…Plex + home automation is left for the  and not the layperson.

I just wish Plex would be more transparent with their roadmap; I have no clue where Plex’s head is at. Except I keep getting features I don’t want or need i.e., Web Shows, RT News, etc.

A lot of paying customers who bought into the whole cord cutting is wondering why there are so many issues with the product — especially Nvidia Shield TV owners.

What issues with the Nvidia Shield. I use it every single day and don’t have any problems?

First time (I’ve seen) somebody offering an explanation as to why this might never happen at all that actually makes sense. Thank You!

Holy moly this is absolutely essential!! This is the main reason my partner and I don’t use Plex that much anymore, it’s so ridiculously convenient to tell Google to just play a TV show on Netflix rather than open the app, etc.

Please please please let this be the next big thing for Plex!

I realise there are key integrations and functions that need to work both from Google’s side and Plex’s side. Hell, if they get Google Assistant / Home / Cast working… count me in for a lifetime sub!

Hire the phlex developer That might help. Since his soft works quite nicelly even with “google problems”.

This feature request has pretty much double the number of votes as the next requested feature yet there is no feedback at all from Plex to let the users know if it is even being looked at.

I just don’t get this, why even bother setting up a system to get user input on features we would like to see if you get such an overwhelming response and do nothing about it.

How? Seven posts up is a post from the Plex CTO referencing a post on Reddit and saying this is true as to the current status of the feature.

Fair Call, I missed that comment. Not sure why they are commenting on reddit and not here though.

Still don’t see how they say it’s not possible when Phlex is doing it (not that I can get it to run, the setup is way too complex)

Frankly I wouldn’t mind having to say “Hey Google, ask Plex to play the lastest episode of Fame Of Thrones”

It seems what is needed (by looking at Phlex) is a web server to handle the request. Should be easy to build into Plex.

I too have been waiting for this feature. I mainly need it for my music collection on my server. I’m currently using both Google Play Music and PLEX to store my music. I’ve uploaded my entire music collection to Google only because it’s integrated with Google Home. I would love to be able to ask Google to play a song or album from my PLEX server instead. Plus, I’ve heard that Google Play Music won’t be supported for much longer.

Unfortunately, I’m currently stuck managing two large and identical music libraries. Please PLEX, give us an update on the progress of Google integration, if any.

Yes, google integration would have been so simple with ifttt and webhooks. Totally possible and doable even if one does not have the full support of google home themselves.

This is doable by the plex team. Maybe one day they will take us seriously and give us what we want.
