When I watch movies on the PS3 app It is rendered with a green bar on the right of the screen.
Also movies don’t auto-start after hitting selecting them I have to once again hit the play button after the movie is chosen.

is the green bar there with every movie? or is it limited to some movies?

can you explain this in a bit more in detail please?
This sounds like an encoding issue. I used to get something like this when I didn’t let my software auto-crop a DVD video. It’s like it encodes noise on the edge.
The green bar only displays in the plex viewer on the PS3 on the right hand side of the screen. It looks like a rendering or encoding error. If I watch the same movie under DLNA on the PS3 I don’t have the display issue.
I’ve noticed this with DVD-rips that have the aspect ratio problem.
I can say the issue isn’t limited to dvd-rips, but I think it might be an upscalling issue as it seems to be prevalent on 720p movies played at 1080p resolution after it has been resampled to 8mbps. (Direct play just won’t work at all for me).

Interesting. I’ll check that out.
Upon further testing if Direct Stream is disabled then the movies transcodes and has a bar of slightly darker color on the RH side where the Green Bar was. It’s still a weird artifact. Also Direct play still doesn’t work for these encoding size.
