So here’s a wild idea. I don’t know if it’s at all feasable (I’m at best mediocre in programming).
Imagine having the possibility to give all your clean, neat HD movies the dirty old grindhouse look: scratches, dirt, dye failure, splices, the occasional hair or defocus, the masking, maybe even fake reel change marks.
Should work like an optional filter preset bank at Plex’s output, I suppose. Filter programming could maybe work like it does in VLC players, sort of open source (again, I’m not the real expert, so this is a wild guess).
The idea is, that - especially if have a big screen home theater - you’d get that retro celluloid athmosphere, even if it’s just for grindhouse party. Combine it in a playlist with trailers, retro ads for snacks and stuff and you’ve got the perfect soirée.
So maybe anybody (more expert than me) is interested in such a simulator… worth a discussion anyway 
I’m no programmer either, but it seems like you’d be trying to mux these effects in with the video stream on the fly, which is probably a no-go. That means pre-muxing the entire stream prior to playback, which could probably be better handled by a third party utility.
I’ll send my whole collection through After Effects :)) but I think I see what you mean. Hmmmm, maybe there is a way to create a player with said effects (ffmpeg maybe?) and have it work as a Plex client, on a Mac mini for instance. guess I’ll have to wander into the depths of the matter. I’ll leave the question open for the moment, any more hints absolutely welcome. I’ve only been plexed like two moths ago, and the whole thing is so enjoyable one wants to include all kinds of gadgets
I’m no expert, just throwing my opinion out there:
The honl way I’d see this working for now is if you used an Android box for playback, used the “use external player” option, and found a player that has such a filter available.
Or kodi, if you can find an extension for it that does something similar.
